Hello all,

I'm still finalizing where I'm going to live at USC. I was wondering if you guys could tell me some of the "bad" or unsafe parts of Columbia. I'll be living somewhere close to or on campus so I was wondering if there are any bad places close to the school.

Thanks!

you’ll be fine,no worries.
if you arent an undergrad, I’d be more concerned about picking a spot crawling with party type undergrads 9there are many apt complexes catering to undergrads)
S’s friend who is now a law student lives on Main Street near the Art ZMuseum

i will be a grad student so i was somewhat concerned about places with wild/noisy undergrads.

do you know any spots or apartment complexes that are particularly bad?

thanks!

every year it seems some complex gets the bad reputation as “party central” usually its the newest complex to be built (theres lots of newly opened places) and also has to do with a concentration of frat/sorority related kids taking up residence there.
Some places (in the past) that have had notorious reputations are Copper Beech,Garnet Riverwalk, Aspyre. Son lived junior and senior years at Pointe West which seemed quieter (was slightly out of the way) but was still predominately undergrad.
Things to consider are: will you need transportation? some complexes run shuttles to campus. will you need roomates? some of the complexes will roomate match. what is your price range? Some of the older, closeby(walkable) individual buildings are Claire Tower,Cornell Arms, Senate Plaza, Capitol Places, Wiltshire House (these do not cater to undergrads). There are Craigslist listings for columbia, take a look there. Also, the Grad School or your individual department or college may keep listings or have reccomendations.
I just googled graduate student housing, university of south carolina columbia and was led to gradschool.sc.edu/housing.htm which has a listing service for off campus housing

thank you for your informative reply!

yes, i will need transportation as I wont have a car. i’ll be a psychology grad student so i’m looking for places close to the barnwell building. I was looking at some of the older/close by places you mentioned so i’m glad they don’t cater to undergrads

I did see that housing listings on the USC website but unfortunately you need a USC id to log in. I won’t get my USC until August so it seems many grad students won’t have access to the listings until its too late. I’m trying to see if I can get my login early though…

thanks again!
