Hi CC and users,

I've been really sad lately because I'd already been rejected by two schools, and I only got into my one safety school, so far. I'm really depressed. There are 7 more schools to hear from but they're all very competitive ones so I'm extremely worried now. Should I still keep my hopes up?

Absolutely keep your hopes up!!!

I know I’ve posted this before, but you obviously didn’t see it, so I will post it again.
My D’s good friend last year applied to 7 (I think) schools for flute performance. She was rejected at the first six. The only school she hadn’t heard from was her first choice school (a very competitive, well-known program). She was so worried that she started applying to Community Colleges when… guess what? She got into her first choice school!

So don’t lose hope yet; you never know what might happen.

Rachelee, don’t be depressed. This is all out of your hands right now, so just try to stay on an even keel. My daughter got rejected by her first choice, and first school she auditioned to, UT Austin. She hasn’t even told her music teacher yet because it was his alma mater and he thought she would have no problem getting in, based on her level of playing. She really had seen herself going there -she loved the department and the school, and I was hoping for it as well, since she would be nearby and it’s a great school. But she definitely did not play her best that day, for whatever reason (probably because it was her very first audition, and it was in front of only one person, which was odd for her). After that rejection she shook it off and did her best audition of alll at MSM in NYC. She also auditioned at and really fell in love with Blair at Vanderbilt, but was afraid to hope about either, because the academic stats for music student admits are really high at Vandy, and MSM is very competitive. She also did a very good final audition at her safety school, Texas State, and found out she was admitted right away. They have been actively courting her and she was beginning to realize that there would be definite advantages to going there (they are developing a first rate trombone studio under a new young professor), even tho it did not have the level of symphonic program she wanted and is not well known outside of Texas. She was still waiting to hear about audition results from MSM (not til April 1), U of Houston’s Moores School and Blair. Yesterday she received an admit letter from Blair, in advance of the official acceptance package from Vandy next week. She was thrilled. I think her #1 choice is probably MSM, but even if she does get in, financially it will be hard to match what Vandy offers, which is 100% of financial need with no loans (we are of limited means). She also has a wide variety of interests outside music, and I think that her liberal arts courses at Vandy would definitely fulfill that part of her. The school wasn’t really on her radar until she talked to their admissions rep at All State last year and became intrigued, and she loved the school when we visited. You just never know what will happen - out of 7 more schools, one that you least expect might prove to not only want you, but be completely the right fit. Admits depend on what the school needs for that particular year and how well they think you will fit in to the total picture. I know that whether my daughter gets into MSM or not, she will be satisfied that she couldn’t have played better at her audition, and that if she does not get in, they were looking for something else.
Hang in there!!
What schools are you waiting on, and what is your safety school?

That’s really good for her. Well because she did get into where she wanted to go! If that’s going to happen to me I’m fine with that, as long as I get into my first choice. And I’m just wondering, where was her first choice? Do you know?

And thanks Moonmaid for your encouraging words. I hope all turns out well for your daughter! I know someone who got into MSM as french horn and she’s having a very good time there.

I am totally in the same place as you now. I applied to 7 schools and only got callbacks for three. I got rejected by one, so now I’m waiting on the two. The two are very competitive! Especially for sopranos. I am so nervous, but I’m trying not to give up hope and trust that my talent is enough to close the deal. Please let me know how evrything goes! :)

Keep your chin up. Last year I applied to 4 schools (yeah, stupid me. I know.) and the first 3 responses I got back were rejections. I was sure the last would be too, but I was accepted. You just have to think positive.

riku92mr,

if you’re having a good time where you go now, that’s all that matters right? but i’m just curious, where are you now?
