Bad SAT Essay score / graded paper and ECs

Hello, I’m a junior who is really hoping to apply to Brown next year and I just found out today that I got an SAT score that makes me competitive but I also scored really low on the essay portion. I didn’t study for it as seriously as I did for the rest of the test (I mostly focused on math) and got a 6/2/6. I swear I’m a good writer! I’m EIC of my school’s journalism program and I’ve been published in local papers. I’m also in AP Lang and am expecting a 4/5 from the test!
I was researching and found out that if I want to keep the SAT score that I am extremely happy with, I’ll also need to send my horrible essay scores. I was wondering if showing that I am a competent writer through my ECs, APs, subject tests, and also the graded paper can counteract that bad score, especially because the graded paper I’m sending is a rhetoric paper that I ROCKED in AP Lang. Thanks for any feedback!

I wouldn’t worry at all about the essay score. There is a reason that most colleges don’t require it anymore. My son got into Brown with a low essay score (I think it was the same as yours) but strong SAT scores along with strengths in other areas of the application.

Thank you, I was really happy about my score until I saw that I completely misunderstood the essay prompt!

Seems like you would benefit greatly from Brown’s policy change the other year to not require SAT essay submission: https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rhode-island/articles/2018-07-12/brown-university-drops-sat-essay-from-admission-requirements
