Bad SAT score sent automatically to top colleges. Should I be worried?

Hello and respect to all,
I gave SAT for the first time without any preparation and hence my scores are horrible. I unknowingly used the free score sending option and chose some top universities. Now my scores are not even their ballpark. I will give SAT again after doing some coaching later this year and will definitely try to get a good score. But will these low scores bottleneck my good scores which would be sent to same universities later this year. Please reply. (I am an international student BTW!)
Thanks.

Most probably, it won’t make a difference.

This is because the ‘top’ schools usually want to see ALL of your scores, irrespective of how bad. Further, they won’t even glance at these bad scores before your file has been sent in. So, it doesn’t really matter whether you send them today or later. You would have to send them nevertheless.

For future, keep in mind that CB allows sending old score reports for free along with the new ones. So, I would suggest you plan your college list accordingly. You should NEVER need to send scores to the same college twice.

But for admission, do colleges look only the best score?
Also, won’t these bad scores create poor impression? If yes, then how will this affect my admission chances?
Thanks for reply.

“But for admission, do colleges look only the best score?”

There is no universal policy re the submission of standardized test (ACT and SAT I) results. Some universities permit ScoreChoice and accept super-scoring, others allow an applicant to provide only his most favorable results, still others require ALL scores from ALL examinations. You need to research the specific institutions in which you have interest.

I would not worry too much…If a college superscores, they will pick the best scores. If they don’t, then they will pick the best of one sitting or will look at all.
