BAD SAT's Decent GPA

HI can a 1520 SAT: 540 CR, 500 M, 480 W get me into UCLA
I have a 4.17 UC Weighted GPA

Took 12 semesters of AP and honors classes: Ap U.s His., Ap Lang. and Comp., Ap Lit. and Comp., CHemistry Honors, IB Biology SL, and Ap Calculus AB

over 300 hours of community service
2 years of employment
and lots of school activities: 3 years Track and Field, Cross Country
2 years NHS, 1 year Bible Club
held leadership position such as Co- Captain, Public Relations Officer, and Historian

I am half Filipino and Half Pacific Islander
I am California Resident
parent income ~$60,000

Want to major in Civil Engineering

Note: Took ACT, did bad looking at a score around 22-25
SAT Subj. test just recently taken

why so low and how many times did you take it?

you won't be accepted into engineering with a lack of physics and subpar math scores...

well, maybe you can explain the SAT scores in general, but not having any physics won't help your case.

you shouldve been more safe and apply as undeclared

@toxic_waste: You don't NEED a physics if you're going into engineering. Perhaps a science SAT II of some sort, however.

@OP: Your SAT Is are too low to be considered for UCLA.

Wow your school must have hyper grade-inflation.

yeah I think you need to take math science related SATIIs, I was looking on my DPR the other day and noticed they only considered my math and chem SATII and not my language which is 800 and higher than both math and chem...

OK let me explain my situation

First of all my school does not have "hyper grade-inflation." I have worked extremely hard maintaing straight "A's"
I got some "C's" and "B's" my freshman and the following years maintained straight A's.

I love math. Althought I'm not that great on the subject compared to the brighter batch of students. I started from the lowest of the low-algebra A.
Then took algebra B, then Geometry. Took Pre-cal and algebra 2 in the summer and now taking Ap calculus. Thus, because of this I dont have a strong base for math. I took independent study for the summer classes and finished it in a month-had to do summer in order to take calculus.

I just transfered to california this year. My mom has been a resident, thus making me a resident.

I had to work for three years with my dad's business at Guam, so studying for the SAT's wasnt really easy. Especially with Sports, School activities, grades, and household chores.

I am a very bad test taker.
First time I took the SAT 1340 i believe
then 1520

just took the SAT 2 and ACT

I couldnt take physics because it was in the same period as my AP calculus class. :(

Sorry for the long read...but I really want to get in
I feel my essay is really good and because of my ethnicity I hope it will help.

true, he doesn't need it, but it shows preparation and that he knows what he's going into. AP english and history is nice and all, but what does that tell anyone about his ability to succeed in an engineering program? so yeah, maybe SATII physics will suffice, but he still has to take a physics class at least. if he hasn't already, anyway.

..that doesn't really explain why you have a stellar GPA and really bad test scores. you should still be doing at least OK in math...it doesn't get very advanced.

When you see a high GPA but low SAT, you really can't help but wonder how that story went. Hopefully you explained that somewhere in your app.

i dont think your gpa is enough to save your low sat score especially as an engineer applicant, and unfortunately they will not consider your application for general admissions into the school of l&s if you apply for engineering. if you want a much higher chance of getting into ucla, you really should apply for any major or undeclared l&s, because if you go through with an engineering application, your situation would be to hope for the best, but more than likely prepare for the worst

You mean to L&S? Because major, in and of itself, means nothing at application time. All that matters is the school you apply for.

this is pretty crazy.

well I don't think applying as LS would help too much due to SAT, engineering is more like higher score than LS students in Math and Science related scores(like high SAT math, SATII math, science) and can be a bit lower in language related fields.

I dont think admissions works that way (you should have high scores regardless of what subject). For admissions to like only high science scores and physics classes and what not would mean they expect high school students to know they want to do engineering way before they even apply.

Well, you could always rely on the luck factor. My girlfriend got a 1520 on the SATs, and my friend got around 1200 on hers. Both are here at UCLA right now, and both had decent GPAs (4.1 for the former, 3.8 for the latter).

Remember that your personal statement can have a great effect on how admissions officials perceive your application, and how you can explain your low SAT.

1200 out of 2400 or 1600? if 1200 out of 24 with 3.8 gpa then she is truly amazing...

2400, both on the new SAT. I was surprised she got in, but she had a really intimate personal statement; I think that was the trick.

Pardon me for being a jerk/killjoy, but I think it's GENERALLY unreasonable for UCLA to be admitting people with sub-1800 SATs. And not because I think that UCLA should be trying to pad its median SAT score, but because I think that it's usually unfair to the admitted student. Let's be fair here: you're much better off going to UCR and graduating than you are going to UCLA and dropping out.

The person with the sub-1800 score is more likely to drop out than the person with the 1800+. Just my $.02.

I beg to differ(UCLAri). I know tons of people who did great in the SAT's but are so poor with their academics, and vice versa. I dont believe the SATs is a good basis of determining a students success rate in college.
