Bad scores...

i got a 590 on physics...how bad is this really?

hey me too!
*high five

you want at least a 600.

balistik- thats pretty raw.
are we really screwed w/ 590? sigh

thats pretty bad :(

dude dont trip just retake it
i will have to retake my physics test in january for MIT...did good on math 2 thank god

If you're thinking about one of the following or a similar school you need 700 plus to be in the middle 50% : (they've disclosed it) Rice, Middlebury, Princeton, MIT.

Does this apply to other subject tests as well? I took French w/ Listening, by the way.

you should at least go for 600 in all the subject tests.

590 on physics is 34 percentile.

ah i am so screwed...should i retake it in january? my math2 and bio scores are pretty good.

if your math and bio scores are fine, don't worry about it. Most places will look at your top two scores and call it good. There's a reason the application process consists of more than just sending SAT scores

yea but some of the schools i am applying to say that they "recommend 3 SAT IIs" how would that play in?

http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/utilities/faq/admissions/tests/index.html

harvard has some of the stiffest requirements in the nation as far as testing goes (not a for or against statement, notice I said SOME)

They require three subject tests, but read the bottom link about submitting more than three. They look at your three top scores and call it good. But it really isn't worth taking a test more than twice.

For your original question, only you can answer that. You have never opened a physics book in your life, a 590 is pretty solid. However, if you have taken both ap classes, already declared it as a major and have several published papers, you may want to look at it again.

Wow! Harvard's requirements are pretty harsh. "Taking the required tests more than twice provides diminishing returns." That's absolutely crazy!! Most people take the reasoning test at least 3 times! Luckily, I haven't taken it yet, so I haven't surpassed their ridiculous limit. Harvard isn't my dream school, but I will still apply for the fun of it (just like many many many other people across the world...). Good luck to everyone!

rockermr, Harvard's statement means that in reality, scores tend to diminish after the second testing, not that Harvard considers taking a test the 3rd time negatively.
josmith807, retake the test if you are confident you can score at least 650.

Is the SAT II physics really that scary? I mean the only thing that would concern me is the math (I have not taken calculus) but since that's not really on the test, is it really that hard? I am in AP physics now, should I try it?

is it a little late tho? the next test i can sign up for is in january, which is after all of my apps are due

If you're in AP physics, and you've had another physics class before, like honors physics, you should take it. Just buy a study book.
