Hi I am accepted to UF (my first choice) and recently committed to it.
I am currently a senior worrying about my bad grades in 2nd semester.
My grades have been pretty good in the past with like 11 ap classes. (All A’s with few B’s)
However, I got 2 C’s in the first semester and I feel like I’m going to actually FAIL Ap calculus this semester. (Below 70 at my school)
I find it kind of strange yet relaxing that U of Michigan didn’t say anything for my two C’s after they got my mid year report.
I am so so crazy worried about my grades and the high chances of getting rescinded.
Do you guys think I will be able to explain my situation to UF later?
I had to start working 2nd semester because my mom got unemployed and I had to supplement the family income.
I started getting those “reduced lunch fees” and got help with my AP fees because the income is below 40,000.
I’m working 4~5 days a week (waitress, darn intense) which is really challenging for me to keep up with all the school work.
I’m being real honest here with my situation because I really do want to hear the real outcome that I will have to face.
PLEASE HELP ME!
An F can get you rescinded. You need to talk to your counselor immediately. Your counselor can intervene with the college on your behalf and help explain the situation. You need to get a tutor and/or extra help from your teacher immediately. Don’t wait one more day. You might find yourself with no college to go to.
Even that “excuse” is not good enough?? I asked UF and they said I will be able to explain anything about the grades later… @Lindagaf
I agree that an F can definitely be a problem. Many colleges only see year end grades so you need to pull it back up to a C by year end. Talk to your guidance counselor. Talk to the teacher. Follow the advice given above.
@happy1 thanks for the reply! So I’m guessing my “excuse” won’t really soothe the situation??
The only way to know for sure is to contact the college admissions dept. and ask. But generally failing a class is bad.
Is calc related to your possible major? Will you have met all your hs grad requirements? No, working/needing to work isn’t an automatic excuse. You may have to work in college, too, and they still expect a certain level of performance.
Talk to your teacher, don’t fail calc. Just don’t fail it.
You really want to avoid D’s as well.
I agree with all the above. UF MAY give some leeway in this case but there’s no way to know and you are risking a lot. Talk to the GC, talk to the teacher, do extra credit, talk to the college and ask their opinion. Is there a way to drop it?
@happy1 yeah I have emailed them before but all the said was “you will be given an opportunity to explain your circumstances.”
@lookingforward AP Calc is my 5th math credit that I just took it just cause. I have met all of the requirements. In fact, I have way more like 6 science credits and etc if that changes even a bit.
@“Erin’s Dad” nope! I tried to drop it but I got a B last semester so my teacher didnt recommend to the counselor saying I have “potential.” I feel like this is a stupid question, but extra credits?? I have never seen anyone doing “extra” extra credits other than given to the “whole class.” I’ll check.
If you explain to your teacher, they may let you do extra credit assignments or retake a test or something. This is not your run of the mill grade grubbing. Explain to them what you have riding on it. Your GC may help convince the teacher.
.
@HRSMom yeah I have retaken the test once/ we only get one retake opportunity per semester. Maybe for extra credit assignments…i haven’t terribly failed YET. It’s like a c but just scared…
Start a conversation with the teacher NOW. They don’t want you to fail either!!
I have…i will see if I could do anything else! My GC and calc teacher know the situation. Thanks thanks! @HRSMom
Do everything you can to keep in it that C range…
