Bad senior year grades

I have consistently received all A's with a few B's here and there...but first semester of senior year I have done HORRIBLY and gotten Bs and Cs....I have had to miss school a lot due to my health problems that really flared up this year..
They are all difficult classes: AP Literature, AP Statistics, AP Gov/Politics, AP/IB Spanish, AP/IB Biology HL 1, IB Biology HL 2...
I am trying to apply to decent private schools, like JHU, CMU, Boston College, Rice, WUSTL, UPenn, etc....
What is the best way to approach this? SHould i send an email to the admissions counselor explaining it?
please help me out !!!! thank you thank you thank you!!!

You shouldn’t do it, you should have your HS GC contact the schools and explain about your health issues.

thank you @entomom for your input!
my GC already submitted a rec on common app before for EA/ED so should she email the schools individually?

Once the app is submitted, notifying individual colleges is about the only option. Check the college websites and find out how they prefer updates be submitted (email/FAX/etc.).
