My friend is currently in a tough situation. She is currently a junior in high school, and has always been an A student. Last year, however, she performed very poorly and failed a class, and received a C in another. Her GPA so far, including those grades, is around a 3.7 unweighted. Ever since then, she's worked really hard and her grades are back to straight A's, her SAT score is a 2100, and she's done absolutely remarkable activities through high school and summer internships abroad. Do you think the poor grades will affect her chances of getting into schools like Georgetown, GW, Boston University, Emory, or UNC Chapel Hill?

I know someone who was denied admission into UMASS Amherst because of his sophomore grades, but I think he got more than a couple C’s and D’s.

If your friend has some sort of circumstance that caused her sub-par grades that year, she should make a note of it in the adittional information section on the application. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. But if the grades are going to hurt her either way, might as well try to explain. But remember: use the circumstance as an explaination only, not an excuse. And note how the grades have improved and are still improving.

Thank you very much, that really helps! With that, does anybody have any feedback for those particular colleges?
