Hi im a sophomore at a very top rigorous high school. I did poorly this year and I want to see if I have any hope in getting into colleges I want. I know i am only a sophomore but i really want to be sure.
Freshman year: 3 honors, 2 ap classes (rest reg) gpa weighted: 4.48 (got 1 C 1st semester)
Sophomore year: 1 honors, 3 ap, 1 ib classes (rest reg) gpa weighted 1st semester: 4.14 (4 B’s)
I am currently in 2nd semester of the year and I have 1 C in AP computer science that i do not think I can raise:(
(Most kids in my grade are really smart and some are even getting 4.8 gpa’s.)
SAT: My first attempt at the SAT was this year and I got 1480. My psat score this year is 1470.
Extra curriculars:
- school’s FBLA club state competitor (this year)
- volunteering at local hospital and part of student leadership team
- currently working for gold congressional award
- on school’s UNICEF board
- on swim team
I know I have junior year and senior year to show my full potential to colleges so what grades would I have to get next year and senior year to have a chance at UCSD, UCLA UCB? I dont know much about colleges still but those are the UCs i am interested in right now.
If you indeed apply with two C’s, it may be insurmountable for UC Berkeley and UCLA. UCSD may still be realistic assuming you run the table with all A’s from here on out. Also, keep expanding on your extra-ciriculars. Good luck and don’t worry about it too much. Other UC’s like Davis and SB are awesome and my friends love it there.
UC’s only use 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation, so your UC GPA will take a hit. Senior grades and Freshman grades are important to show that you have completed and passed the a-g course requirements and doing well Senior year will maintain your provisional admission but will not included in your GPA since the deadline for the application is Nov 30th.
Here is the UC GPA calculator, so you will need to wait until end of Junior year to get a realistic picture of your chances. Although UC’s are very GPA focused, your test scores, EC’s and essays will all play an important part in your chances. Your SAT score is definitely competitive for the majority of the UC’s and also intended major will contribute to your chances.

Hi thanks for the response! I calculated my uc gpa and it came out to 4.04 if I get all a’s junior year. Do i have a chance at ucsd??
Yes, you do have a chance at UCSD. GPA/Test scores/EC’s and essays will all contribute to your chances along with intended major. Apply widely since the UC’s continue to get more competitive each year. If in-state also consider some top Cal States and solid Match and Safety schools.
