Bad transfer situation - 3 options to consider, advice needed

Hey everyone-

I currently have a 3.8 as a Freshman at the University of Maryland, about to get a 4.0 this second semester. Unfortunately, I have been getting in trouble with the school for drinking and pot over this past year. I found out on Friday that if I come back in the fall I will most likely have to fight a 1 year suspension which would go on my perm. record. Because of that, I am planning on withdrawing and looking at other schools.

Since this happened so recently, I have limited options of where to transfer to. My parents want me close to home again (CT) and may want me to take a year off. I want to major in Accounting and get a CPA, btw. My three options are:

1) Year or half-year at community college or lesser college (University of Hartford, URI, Bryant University) and then try and transfer to better school on par with UMD (possibly Miami OH)

2) Go to lesser college and stay there for rest of college

3) Take a year off and either work or volunteer, then apply to schools on par with UMD

I looked at BU, Northeastern, and Bentley and it is too late to try and transfer to those places for next Fall. I am not sure which option will look best on my eventual end of college record. I am also not sure which would require the least explaining to future colleges. If anyone could offer any advice let me know.

Hey I don’t think you should take the year off. Staying in school keeps u on your toes and sharpens your mind more… Maybe you should transfer to a university that has rolling admissions, some schools take transfers as late as June… schools like Temple and Pace (I think)
OR you could
Get ur gpa up at a community college as well…
they are always allowing students in for the coming semester…

“Unfortunately, I have been getting in trouble with the school for drinking and pot over this past year.”

Take the year off. Work. And/or volunteer. You have been in school non-stop since you were what 3 or 4 years old? It is OK to take a break while you figure out how to be an adult without getting in trouble with the school (or the cops) for this kind of thing. This way you would be able to return to UMD in good status if you want to, and you would have time to organize a solid list for your transfer applications if you don’t want to go back there.
