I got only an 8 on my essay, which gave me an English/Writing score of 29. My composite score was a 30 and I am kind of surprised and disapointed that my essay score was low, since English has always been my best subject and I'm a good writer (straight A's in English, 5 on AP Lang exam).
How will this score affect my college admission and placement in classes? Or is an 8 not that bad?

An 8 is fine, more than adequate for an ACT prompt. What matters the most are your 4 subject scores (and of course your composite score). The combine English/Writing score (and the writing score itself) really are not that big of a deal. If it makes you feel any better, I got an 8 on my writing when I took my ACTs a year and a half ago, and college admissions turned out fine for me.

An 8 is perfectly acceptable. Many colleges don’t even look at the writing score and those that do put little importance on it.
