Son got Baits II and we know it's not a dorm anyone requests...so be honest...how awful is it? :(

It sucks...I didn't live there, but I know people who did, and I had to go there once to work on a calc 3 project...it's terrible. The bus ride takes seemingly forever, the rooms are worse than other dorms, and it's not close to anything...

haha, damn boysrus3... u got screwed

Baits is certainly not ideally located and the dorm lacks the liveliness of most other dorms, primarily because you have many graduate and Engineering students living there.

However, the dorm has its strengths. It is quiet and tranquil, very convenient for studying.

I do not usually recommend a student take a car to Michigan...but I would make an exception at Baits. I would definitely look into the logisitcs (parking availlability etc...) and if it is financially viable, let your son have a car. He will not need it to go to class as the bus system will take care of that. But for all other things, a car will seriously simplify his life.

When I transfered as a junior to UM many years ago, I was assigned to Baits. I spent a miserable two weeks there. Most students were older and not interested in meeting people, the only place to eat was a nearby freshman dorm, and the bus schedule was a nightmare. I had to get back to my dorm before the coach turned into a pumpkin, plus the bus stop never felt safe.

I was able to move to a room in Oxford Housing, luckily. At the time, it was run as a co-op, so we all worked and ate together, and I met a lot of nice poeple. And it is in walking distance to campus.

It's a shame they put a freshman in Baits.

to the original poster- did your son apply late or something, which might explain why he got this dorm?

I lived in Baits I housing as a freshman and can honestly say that the experience is not nearly as horrible as people have made it seem. Usually baits residents form extremely close friendship with their dormmates due to the isolation and because there is a parking lot in front of your dorm whether Baits I or II most student( including freshman) have the option to bring cars and pay low permit price in relevance to other parking on campus. The rooms do afford some added space because they are somewhat more spacious that other dorm rooms on campus but the suite style bathrooms are a pain because you and your roomates are responsible for keeping them clean. The biggest tip I can offer is to understand the Bus system as best as possible because then you can make to most of your time.

One more thing, Bursley residents seriously crowd the bus so the bus actually picks up baits residents first and drops them off last.

Baits isn't all bad...first of all, there are no graduate students living there anymore - and very few juniors and seniors live in the dorms. It will be mostly freshmen and sophomores. Second, most rooms are suites - so you share your bathroom with only 3 other people. There are something like 800 people living in Baits, so you're going to meet some people and it will be OK. In terms of the bus, the bus goes to Baits first - so it's actually less of a problem than for kids in Bursley.
