Any suggestions about how/where to find yeast and/or recipes that don’t require yeast would be appreciated. Thanks.
We love to make naan and that’s easy to make without yeast. This is our favorite naan recipe that uses baking powder instead of yeast for the leavening.

When they refer to “plain” flour, All Purpose flour works. And when they refer to a “grill” that’s what most Americans call a broiler, but I don’t use the broiler, I bake them on a flat cast iron griddle.
Thanks @milee30, that sounds yummy!
If have baking powder/baking soda available, you can make quick breads–
Beer bread, Irish soda bread, cheese bread…
I really like this Cinnamon Swirl Quick Bread
https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/cinnamon-swirl-quick-bread/
It’s like coffee cake, only baked in loaf pan.
King Arthur’s Flour has a whole section devoted to quick bread recipes

The Double Chocolate Zucchini Quick Bread is wonderful! Very moist and people are always shocked when you tell them it’s made with zucchini. I take it to pot lucks all the time during the summer, esp. when the summer squash has been overly abundant in the garden.
Thanks @WayOutWestMom! Nice to know other’s favorites. I haven’t been doing much baking since my early 20s. Maybe will see what my kids want to do.
And I love this recipe for flour tortillas
https://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-recipe/sprouted-whole-wheat-tortillas/
The recipe calls for sprouted whole wheat flour that is hard to find, but you can substitute whole wheat or hold all purpose/half wheat flour and it sparks just fine.
I make mine with KA white whole wheat flour.
The baking powder is optional, but I think it make a more tender tortilla of you use it.
Serve warm with butter and honey.
If you want to try sourdough baking but don’t want to culture your own starter, try this website. [Cultures for Health](https://www.culturesforhealth.com)
It sells starter cultures for sourdough, yogurt, kombucha, cheeses, kefir, tempeh, and pickled vegetables.
Right now shipping is free in the continental US.
Another no yeast bread is Beer Bread. Of course, the yeast is in the beer. And since liquor stores are open, finding beer is easy. The beer flavor comes through in the loaf, so choose a beer that you like.
You can google for the 3 ingredient version which uses self-rising flour or you can use this one which uses regular flour. This version also uses honey but you can use sugar instead (which is what I do). Also, adding the butter on top is optional - I’ve never done that. Super easy and quick to make since you only have to mix the ingredients with a spoon - no kneading required.
^^ My current favorite food/recipe source - Half Baked Harvest!
OK, I clicked on that link to see the recipes and am hung up on that weird picture in the top right corner. That does not make me want to eat the food - it looks like the witch of sorrow has snuck out of the darkness to sprinkle something questionable on the cake.
But the recipes do look good - especially the beer bread one - so I’ll try to ignore the strange picture.
That is a picture of Tieghan, the Half Baked Harvest creator! She is quite young (26?) and VERY successful. If you’re on Instagram look up HBH - you will not be disappointed!
No, thanks. If that’s a picture representing her vibe, I’m not remotely interested.
She and the Peloton people might want to have a third party who’s not on the payroll or who’s not enamored with them take a look at some of their messaging/pictures independent of the others. It may not be sending the message they want. (I still love to tease my friend about whether her Peloton bike terrifies her like it did the poor woman on the ad.)
@Madison85 or anyone, I’ve got egg allergies to work around. Do you think I could make the Spicy Cheese Bread using a regular bread dough?
Well, the fact that her cookbooks have been NYT best sellers in addition to other accolades probably shows that more people are interested in her skills as a cook/recipe developer/photographer than how she looks.
But to each his own.
I think she’s pretty.
The yeast bread version?
Egg substitute:
For 1 egg----3 TBSP of ground flax seed mixed with 1 TBSP of cold water. Stir together and let sit for 10-15 minutes until it gels. It will have slightly goopy, slimy texture like egg white.
The flax seed will give a pleasing brown speckled color to the bread and a slight nutty flavor.
@WayOutWestMom thank you! I feel like a killjoy because we have flax seed allergies too – and many others! But I do have a really nice egg substitute that has a similar texture to what you describe. I’ll go with that rather than a completely different recipe.
Bummer about the allergies, @HouseChatte
I learned a bunch of substitutes for eggs when my daughter was vegan. (She’s still occasionally vegan, but now mostly vegetarian–which makes my life easier.)
You could try the spicy cheese bread with a regular eggless bread dough --the only difference would be in a less rich final product and the bread won’t rise quite as high or be quite as tender. You might want to add a bit of butter/margarine or some other oil to dough to help compensate. Maybe around 1 TBSP?
It’s the fat in the egg yolk that really makes the difference in bread texture. Fat inhibits gluten formation.
@WayOutWestMom butter is a go, and a go-to! Thanks for the added tip!
Vegan recipes are my welcome shortcut to eggless recipes, but we love our dairies.
I am loving all of the recipes on this thread. We have a 25 lb. bag of flour that’s ready to be used!
I hope to try @bookreader1 's beer bread.
