Hi, I'm an incoming freshman who intends to do Economics or Haas later on. I'm trying to create a good first semester schedule that will be both rigorous (so I look competitive at Haas) but also doable in my first semester at Cal. I have two quick questions:

1) Is it a good idea to take UGBA 10 during the first semester of my freshman year?
2) If I don't take UGBA 10, this is what my schedule will look like. Is this a doable/balanced schedule?:

Statistics 21 (Econ or Business prerequisite)

Introduction to General Astronomy (Physical Sciences Breadth)

Rhetoric R1A (R&C requirement)

Math 1B (Haas prerequisite)

ps. I've already taken AP Calc BC and gotten a 5 but I'm thinking of Math 1B because it's a new Haas prerequisite.

^ Alright thanks for the advice! I will keep UGBA 10 for my second semester then. Also, yeah I wasn’t too sure either if it would be a good idea to double up on math classes by taking Math 1B and Stats 21… I figured that since I’ve already take AP Calc BC and done well in it, most of the stuff would be familiar. But is it true that if you’ve done Calc BC then Math 1B will be a breeze?

@ IvyRomantic: I was considering replacing Math 1B with UGBA 10 in that schedule. Haha I didn’t mean that I wanted to add UGBA 10 to the 4 classes I already have… I’m not that crazy :P

Well, this is total hearsay so take it for what it’s worth, but someone in Haas I was talking to told me that she and her friends agreed that Stats 21 was the hardest business prereq, and that taking it as late as possible is a good idea (maybe second semester sophomore year?), that way the grade you get in the class isn’t as important.

Looking at CourseRank, it does have a B- average grade, which is pretty much the lowest grade average a class can have.

Math 1B seems to be pretty hit-or-miss, but I don’t think anyone would deny that it’s a difficult class. So couple that with Stats 21, regardless of your math ability, and you’re going to be doing lots and lots of hard math. :|

Really? I thought Stat 21 would be the easier of the statistics classes because it was more geared towards the business aspect of statistics and less quantitative. But I can still change classes. Should I take a different Stat class then? I can take any one among Stat 20, 21, or 25 to fulfill the Haas prerequisite. Are any of these other two easier than Stat 21??

I’m not really sure, but I just wouldn’t take Stats and Math in the same semester, in general. But it’s up to you, of course! You could be completely fine.

Also for Math 1B, there are two professors and both classes are open: V. Jones and M. Olsson. I was thinking about taking the class with Jones because its on TuThu and I have no classes (only discussion sessions then). But is any one of them really much better than the other?

Professors in lower division doesn’t really matter. In fact, one professor could give such good lectures but give brutal tests while the other professor could do the opposite. It is likely that one of them is indeed better than the other in terms of lecture quality, but grading-wise it could be a different story. Having a good GSI helps you too since they’re the ones who gives quizzes and actually controls your grade.
