Thank you, chendrix!

Don’t the rooms in Balch have two closets? one with drawers and then one to hang clothes in?

Yes, my daughter’s room had 2 closets; one in which to hang clothes and one with drawers. There was no dresser, but the drawers in the closet were nice and big, and even though she totally over-packed, she had plenty of room for her clothing. Also, there was a shelf above the bar in the hanging closet which was useful for extra storage, and there was a good amount of space for storage above the drawers in the second closet, where she kept sweaters and bulkier items. Overall, a very practical set-up.

Thanks so much for the details, JustAMom!

does anyone know what the triples in balch are like?
I know that supposedly they are huge. But what exactly do they look like, as in how are things set up in triples? do they have normal beds, or are the beds bunked?
and does anyone know if i need to bring a full length mirror, or if the rooms have them?

some triples are actual triples. some are doubles which become forced triples. either way, they are still really big

they have normal beds. in the forced triples, there may be one bunk bed and one single bed

the rooms have mirrors on the inside of the closet doors

how much clothes storage is available? is there enough for about two suitcases worth of clothing maybe more? or am i totally overpacking?

you have 2 closets, one that is an actual closet and 1 that has a bunch of drawers. i think i am the epitome of overpacking: i brought my wardrobe and had room for all of it.

i had 2 suitcases, multiple space bags, and 4 plastic drawers worth haha

ok thanks you so much!

just to clarify, if your in a double there will be 4 pieces? 2 closets and then 2 drawers? Also with the lofting, can you request it after you move in and see how tall your bed is already. I’m afraid of bringing underbed storage if my bed is too low.

yeah you can do a service request whenever you want

does anyone know how many doubles (exact or approximate) are in balch?

not a lot. a large number of people that request doubles end up with singles

@usafa2011dad - thank you! but could you give me an approximate…like less than 50? or something…

Sorry I don’t know the answer to that. Are you really wanting a double?

yeah I kind of want a double. It’s cheaper.

you may be better off with a single. i’m in a double, but my roomate and i are pretty sure that it’s a forced double (meaning we only have one hanging closet and one closet w/ drawers). we’re not too happy about it, especially since we submitted our housing app right away

edit: i just realized this is an old post =/. but anyway, is there anything my roommate and i could do about this storage/space issue?

^ Probably not…two of my friends across the hall from me in Balch were in a forced double. There wasn’t a lot of walking space (their desks took up most of the space between their beds), but I don’t think they had too much trouble with closet space. They split it so that one girl took the hanging closet and one girl took the drawers, but even if you split both closets in half, there will probably be enough room for both of you. Relative to the closet space you’d get in other dorms, Balch closets are really quite large.

Just curious, how can you tell whether or not your room is a “forced” double/triple/etc? Do all “non-forced” doubles necessarily have two closets per person? Thanks :)

you can’t really tell until you move in. doubles should typically have 2 closets and at least one with drawers i believe.

i know that i have a forced double because i found pictures of my dorm (5244) on flickr with only one bed (aka a single). i also found someone on CC who had my room and she said that it’s a very small double.
