Baldwin Wallace Audition songs

I’m auditioning for Baldwin Wallace’s musical theatre department in February and I was just wondering how strict they are with the era and types of songs you pick. I know some schools are very much against doing songs from shows that are currently on broadway, but She Used to be Mine from Waitress is like my go to song… any advice on song selection and what to expect would be greatly appreciated!

I would strongly discourage using it personally. It is heavily used in showcases and school concerts because it is a great song and everyone loves to belt. I know of 4 friends of my son that also consider it one of their go to songs. Jessie Mueller is amazing and very hard not to be compared to her belt and Sara bareilles is so good in the pop ballad version.

Just my 2 cents. I know it is hard when you have a song you love. You have plenty of time to get another song that will showcase your talents!!!

As a general rule, you should not use songs from musicals currently running on Broadway. Of course, for every general rule, there are 100 exceptions.

It’s important to note that while you will take 3 songs into your audition you will probably only sing 2 of them. I agree with the above posters that you should select songs that aren’t currently on Broadway for a whole host of reasons.

I have a slightly different opinion from previous posters. There are no hard and fast rules, unless BW explicitly states “nothing currently on broadway”. However, if you are going to bring a song that may potentially be overdone, you better be sure that you sing it better than anyone else that’s going to be singing it.

If I remember correctly, @kategrizz has a student at BW, so I would heed her advice.

@stagedoormama - not anymore! She graduated! But the crux of @JaneyM’s advice stands “you better be sure you sing it better than anyone else that’s going to be singing it.” Which is the main reason I would advise not to pick anything that can have easy comparisons made… e.g. current Broadway shows. My comment was specifically to let the OP know that it is likely you won’t sing all 3 songs you bring to the audition room. I know some are asked to sing 3rd song - but my D was not. Vicky picked one song - she picked the other - and the third did not get sung in the audition room that day.

^^^she picked both of D’s last year :-).
