Ball State University

Can anyone tell me about this school? I found the website to it the other day and was wanting to know more about it.

I don't know too much about the program. But my one acting partner in the summer program I'm at is going into her junior or senior year there as an MT. She's really talented, great voice and she's a dancer. They seem to be pretty selective and I know that they do have a showcase. It seems like a good, well rounded lesser known program to go into. And from the looks of their website, their graduates have had good success.

I'm from Indiana, and about an hour away from the school. My friend, who's also a poster here, auditioned there. She said their dance audition was long and challenging. Their showcase is a huge draw, as they go out to NYC. It is a really up and coming program, and definatley worth a look. I have friends there who love it, but I've heard you have to manage your time between departments to get a fully triple threat education. I can ask a friend to type up a few quick comments about the program and I'll try to get back to you all.

Chris

Yeah, definitely ask your friend for a quick write up. I have been eyeing this school for a bit and am thinking of auditioning.

Yes! I've love to hear about the school from your friend. I'm adding it to my college list! Thank you. :)

well Ball State has a soft spot in my heart b/c it is where my Mother taught until I was 10. I can't speak for the current state of the department and my vision of it may be slightly off because I was soo little but this department was my introduction to theater. I saw my first show ever in the Emens Auditorium. It was gorgeous and when I was there they had many proffesional companies come through. I remember seeing quite a few of the schools shows and being extremely impressed. Their dance program is excellent as well. It's a beautiful campus and a great place to get an eductation. I love this school!

I'm a H.S. senior and I'm planning to apply to Ball State... but all the info. I know is from the website... do you have any info. from an "insider"'s point of view?

Sorry all, I've been really sick. My friend will be typing up her paragraph about the program from her perspective soon, so if you all can wait another week or so, I'll have it. Hopefully.

Chris

If you still want info on BSU, contact me. I have a close friend who I could hook you up with who is a soph in the MT department.

This school has a lot to offer on many levels and would be a great option for a student who wants to get an MT degree within a "typical collegiate" setting.

I believe they have quite an extensive blog from a variety of students, kind of a running diary, on their website. They also seem to do a LOT of shows (just my impression). The campus is nice, although a little isolated for some tastes.

They are doing Mille and Urinetown (but who isn't doing that next year) I know for sure.

I am a senior graduating from Ball State University - we just opening Urinetown!!! This really is a FANTASTIC musical theatre program - now offering a BFA instead of a BA, so it really is a conservatory atmosphere within a liberal arts setting, which is sort of perfect. I'm going to try to get more BSU musical theatre majors to post on this thread so more people with questions can get them answered. There's also an e-mail that's pretty effective: theatrestu@bsu.edu

I am a freshman at Ball State and literally just got done with today's performance of Urinetown. In my opinion, this program is a wonderful place to hone your craft. All you need in a place like Ball State is the drive to make something of yourself. There are not cuts from the program, only people who cant cut it. If you are willing to bust your hump and stand out, you will go places here and you will be given opportunities.

As far as the audition goes.
The dance is harder than any other place I went (including CCMs) and the staff know whether or not you have worked on something or whether you are half into your scene. Commit and go for it, they respect that. There are like hundreds of people trying out when you are. Why should they pick you? let your personality stand out and just have more fun than anyone else.
I was just blown away when I got here at how much I could learn from the staff. It showed me that as actors we are never done learning and all we can do is never stop. Anyone auditioning should work as hard as if they were going out for Broadway and have confidence. They even give out scholarships based solely on your audition for the program, so a good job means money for college!!

I was just accepted into Ball State's musical theatre program, and I am almost postive that I will be attending next year. I loved it so much, and the people were so kind. The program directors and such were extremely knowledgable, and I was very impressed. It is an exciting and improving program. I can't wait.

My name is Bill jenkins and I am the Department Chair of Theatre and Dance at ball State University. I am a recent member to this "Discussion Board" and I am happy to offer insight about the Musical Theatre Program at ball State, as well as any questions folks may have as they apply to Theatre programs across the country.

Ball State's Music Theatre program is very rigorous. We accept 18 students per year which accounts for approximately 12-15% of those who audition. We currently have a BA/BS program but will be implementing a new BFA in the fall of 2008. We currently offer Showcases in LA, NY, and Chicago. For more info, please visit <www.bsu.edu theatre="">. I am glad to be a part of this great site!</www.bsu.edu></p>

I'm a Sophomore Musical Theatre Major from Ball State University and I am here to tell you how AMAZING this school is!! We have grown so much over the years and we continue to get better and better! We have very talented students here who truly love the art of theatre and have true drive and passion. Everyone is so supportive of everyone else! We are like a family here and I love my family. The main reason why Ball State is so great is it's faculty and staff. You will never, EVER find a more caring and supportive staff and faculty anywhere else!! These people truly care about your success in your field and will do anything to help you accomplish that success! They know us all by name and are always there to provide guidance!
Ball State Bill,

Welcome! I am very pleased to see that another MT program administrator has joined our ranks. I have enjoyed reading posts from Otterbein's Doctorjohn and Florida State's All4FSU. It's great for readers to be able to get information "straight from the horse's mouth".

One of my D's friends from H.S., Betsy H. has been attending your school as a theatre major and says she's very happy.

I am thrilled to be on the website. I have been excited to read the questions and conversations. Betsy H. is a terrific young woman who is doing really wonderfully in the program. We are very excited to have her and will miss her when she graduates next year.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Can anyone offer any information on the Scenic Design program or the Theatrical Studies option? How hard it is to get into these programs and what does Ball State offer that others do not?
