does students go out into the city? I've heard its very unsafe in a poor neighborhood. But I once visited Baltimore on vacation when I was little, and one of the best times of my life. The sickest aquarium ever, all these hella good crab resturants - is baltimore this much fun for the JHU student?

You really should visit. It’s in Charles Village - an eclectic, creative rowhome-centric neighborhood.

From what I know, students do go out in the city for sure - but most tend to do so in their upper years more and more mainly because they get more familiar with the campus and the city (I think this is the norm everywhere).

There are some CRAZY good crab places in Baltimore (O’Brecky’s, Phillips to name a few).

yeah, is that area (Charles Village) different from the rest of Baltimore? It’s got the great weather, crab resturants, sweet locations right?

i mean all areas are quite different - you should definitely visit to get a sense of the community - it’s a lot of fun.

i’ll try to. do you know anything about a sick aquarium haha, i just remember it from when i was a kid is it anywhere near there? that aquarium and the area around that was the best.

There’s a train from around campus that takes students to Inner Harbor, the area I believe you are referring to and that is apparently very popular among students, but this is just from the student interviews on youtube and info on the website; I’m not a student, just a hopeful who has been doing his college research :P

Hope that helps :)

yes thank you!!! i googled it that is exactly what im talking good to know its popular among students

To get around the city students use the Hopkins Shuttle, Taxi’s and the free Baltimore Circulator’s. There are also ZipCars on campus now I think - it’s been a while since I’ve been back but I’ve seen reports of them.

There is light rail in the city but it’s not convenient for JHU students to use unless they are going out to the 'burbs for some reason.

Here is a schematic, where the | is the JHU shuttle and the + is the free circulator:

Baltimore is 64% African-American.

Translation-It’s very safe, not to mention, diverse and vibrant, unlike places with lots of white racists.

I have no problem with that, i’ve been there :)

While JHU has an amazing security system, Baltimore is a city with some safety concerns, including near the JHU campus. If one is not used to living in a true urban environment, raising one’s level of concern for safety would be very important at JHU. Students tend to move in groups outside of the campus area and students need to be very proactive in terms of securing their belongings and their persons. Freshmen and sophomores typically live in guarded dorms but parties and other activities are typically not in the these areas.

There’s also the Baltimore Collegetown shuttle that runs from campus to the Towson Town Center mall (7 days a week) and to the Inner Harbor (Friday-Sunday only)

Re: crab restaurants. No doubt - the best crabcakes around. This week and next weekend are scheduled to be “restaurant weeks” in Baltimore so take advantage of the discounted price at some of the best restuarants.

Another crab cake restaurant: [G&M Crabcakes](http://www.gandmcrabcakes.com/) It’s not exactly close so you’ll need someone with a car, but my parents absolutely rave about this place.

jhu’s homewood location isn’t a totally urban environment, it’s more of a semi-residential area with a few apartments for students. with that said, one’s personal safety can become a concern around the charles village area if you don’t take the necessary precautions. for example, try to bring a few friends along after dark if you are venturing a few blocks off campus for the Giant supermarket or Super Fresh. the best alternative is just to wait for the escort shuttle after 5 pm. If you are heading to inner harbor, i’d recommend taking the public transit (#3 or #11 bus) which stops right outside mattin center on north charles street. if you have a little more cash, i also recommend taking a cab since it’s really easy to get one and relatively cheap (around 10 bucks one way). it only takes less than 10 minutes to drive if you are taking a cab. also take note that there’ll always be a few guys hanging around charles village asking for spare change, so it’s probably best to avoid going out alone after dark.
