Bama Bound orientation dates

I know that the dates for Bama Bound aren’t published yet, but I just took a look at the Parent Orientation site, and they have dates posted there: [Parent Orientation](http://parentorientation.ua.edu/orientation/dates.html)

This will make it easier for parents to plan. I’d suggest the May 27/28 or June 1/2 sessions if possible because there will be more honors students at those. For those that end school late or can’t afford another flight out to UA, the later dates also work, but you do have less of a selection of classes. I decided to take a couple days off of school and do the 2 day May one when I went last year and I’m glad I did.

DD is graduating on May 25th so both of those are doable for her. Question: do you know how the 1 day early honors Bama Bound differs from the 2 day honors Bama Bound later in the month?

This is an accepted student day program? Or is this the real orientation program before school? Is there something later in the summer? Although seniors get dismissed early at some schools, the graduation ceremonies are usually closer to the end of May.

Montegut: Bama Bound is a 2 day program where admitted students register for classes, get their Action Card (which they use for everything on campus including their meals), make sure the health dept. has their immunizations records, have their placement testing done, etc. You can see the Spring 2010 schedule at: http://orientation.ua.edu/details/schedule_spring2010.pdf</a>

While the 1st Bama Bound is 5/14 and the other 2 Honors designated Bama Bound programs are May 27 & 28, and June 1 & 2, there are Bama Bounds happening as late as 7/26.

This is different from the Alabama Action/Outdoor Actions programs that begin on August 8th (and act as a 1 credit class) as well as the Week of Welcome (WOW) program before classes begin.

The one-day Bama Bound Orientation session are just the two day ones (actually a day and a half ones) packed into one day with less break time, no pool party, and no spending a night in the dorms. Since they are all the same price, do a longer one if you can manage the logistics. For an additional fee, parents can spend a night in the dorms with other parents and/or their spouse. There is also a sibling orientation (hs age) if you want to bring a younger child along, an additional cost applies.

If you go to the Family Weekend site, you can sign up to be notified when the date is selected.

I agree that you’ll be with the most honors students then.

the later dates also work, but you do have less of a selection of classes.

While it can be harder, Bama holds back some seats in each freshman class, and releases some of them on each Bama Bound registration day. This way there are seats available in various classes for each session.

Totally agree. The 2-day Bama Bounds give the kids a chance to meet some new friends.

*the graduation ceremonies are usually closer to the end of May. *

We had the same issue. Our kids went to the June 1-2 dates (a Tues and Weds).

IF you click on the link, it gives you all the dates for Bama Bound. But, the earlier dates are for Honors kids. This is when kids register for classes, get the Action Card, learn a lot about the school, etc.

Was it your experience then, if DS attends the June 1-2 Honors dates he will still have plenty of classes to choose from?

I know a lot of people who went to the June 1-2 Bama Bound and got all the classes they wanted. Remember that once a student goes to Bama Bound and registers, they can change their schedule later when the sections they want open up. I think I only ended up taking one of the course sections that I had originally signed up for at Bama Bound.

Bama doesn’t open all the seats at the beginning of the registration period for incoming freshman. Bama releases blocks of seats on the second day of each Bama Bound so that each Bama Bound group has a chance at seats.

So, let’s say that there are 150 sections of Freshman Comp. Bama might release 5 seats in each section for each Bama Bound. (yes, there are that many sections!..Since only 24 kids are in each class, there are a LOT of sections!)

Each incoming Freshman has a “hold” on his ability to register until the second day of their Bama Bound. The kids register on that 2nd day.

Once a student has made up his schedule, he can change it as much as he wants.

Also, note where each building is when making a schedule, so as to avoid any unnecesary “criss-crossing” of campus. :)

It’s always a good idea to show up for Bama Bound with a possible schedule with a few “alternative” choices. (Kind of like Plan A, Plan B, etc.)

Unless your child is a natural “early riser,” I strongly recommend avoiding ANY 8 am classes.

Because of AP exams, a national tournament in Chicago and eventually, graduation, my son could not attend Bama Bound until late June. He still got the classes he sought, thanks to his major’s adviser. My son wanted a particular math class, but it was unavailable during registration. He spoke with his adviser, who made a few calls and got him in that class. So if you are unable to go to the early sessions of Bama Bound, do not worry. There will be plenty of classes available, and if something is closed, ask.

And I agree. If your son or daughter does not like to get up early, discourage him or her from that 8 a.m. class. My son’s earliest classes start at 11 a.m. this semester. Not that he would not get up for the 8 a.m. class, but it’s the way his schedule worked out. He did inform me, however, he will have to take an 8 a.m. class by the time he is a junior.

*

After attending Bama Bound, if a desired class is closed, keep checking on a regular basis because seats open up as kids change their schedules, and as Bama opens more seats in each freshmen section.

And it is possible sometimes to get a department over-ride to get into a class where there are still some unreleased seats.

So are the slots for the one day session just first come first serve among Honors kids in qualifying schools? Cuz I graduate May 27th and start work May 31st, which knocks out both the two-day sessions.

Not sure what you are asking.

If you come for the one-day session in May, you’ll be able to sign up just as easily as you would have if you came in one of the later 2 day sessions.

For each Bama Bound, Alabama releases some seats in each various freshman courses.

Is that what you’re asking? Or something else?

I mean when it comes time to register for a Bama Bound session online, can you register for the single day session the same way as for any other? I only ask because on the student site it said that session was only for Honors kids in certain schools (engineering, business, and arts and sciences), and I wanted to be sure you didn’t have to do anything special to get in that session. I mean, I guess you have to declare a major within those parameters, but would they really check that?

Sorry for being unclear! Internetspeak not good.

Oh…

Did you apply to the honors program?

It doesn’t look like you have to be in any particular major. Or am I missing something?

What are your stats? Are they high enough for honors. If not, are you going to apply to honors after the first semester if you get a 3.3 GPA?

It says in the sidebar only that its only open to certain schools. I’m in Honors, with a declared ChemE major, but my friend is going to be in nursing and can’t make the two-day sessions either. Does that mean she has to register for a regular session?

Is your nursing friend in honors? (Does she know about the new nursing building - very nice! I hope it’s done by Fall (or spring at the latest).

hmmmm…I didn’t see that page. I only saw the parent page (no sidebar on that one.)

I think a phone call is in order to the Orientation/Bama Bound people with an explanation that a later date and a 2-Day Bama Bound won’t work for your friend.

They will probably say something like there won’t be anyone from Nursing to advise your friend at that Bama Bound. They may also say that it won’t be possible for the “hold” to be lifted on your friend’s registration.

But, perhaps being “pro-active” could help with that. If your friend contacted the Nursing advisor soon and presented a likely schedule and got it approved, perhaps the hold could get lifted at the one-day event. This would have to be pre-arranged.
