Bama's NMF & NA scholarship is STILL available.

Because of confusion, I thought that I should clarify....

The deadline for NMFs and NAs has NOT passed to get the large scholarship at Alabama

Bama will accept these students thru April 30 or May 1 (don't remember which date..lol)

that earlier deadline is ONLY for Semi-finalists who don't make NMF

NMF or NA pkg

Value of tuition for up to five years or 10 semesters for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate studies

One year of on-campus housing at regular room rate* (based on assignment by Housing and Residential Communities) (this INCLUDES honors housing)

A $3,500 per year Merit/Achievement Scholarship stipend for four years. A student must maintain at least a 3.3 GPA to continue receiving this scholarship stipend.

If a corporate-sponsored scholarship from the National Merit Corporation is received, the total value cannot exceed $3,500. (For example, if you receive a corporate-sponsored scholarship of $2,000 per year, UA will contribute $1,500 per year to reach the total stipend amount of $3,500.)

One-time allowance of $2,000 for use in summer research or international study (after completing one year of study at UA)

iPad (the latest model...and in the past, has included the bluetooth keyboard)

and if you're an eng'g or CS major, you get an add'l $2500 per year.

MomtoCollegekids: Is it correct that generally upper classmen do not get housing on campus? If so, would sophomore housing at least be available?
For kids that come from far who aren’t moving into a greek house, does the school help you find apartments if they can’t give you housing your second year?
Thanks

Also, how do you apply to the honors college? Does the stipend mean that they pay you that much in cash?

It seems that Alabama and Oklahoma give the most generous NMF packages.

If you qualify for the honors college (I think it’s something like a 3.5 GPA?) they send you an email saying you can apply after you get accepted to the university. There’s one essay and you have to upload a resume. They give a decision pretty quickly.

I think I read somewhere that NMFs get in the honors college automatically.

You have to apply to be in the honors college. The application is easy with a very short essay required, telling about yourself.

The stipend is applied to your BAMA account. If you have more money in the account from scholarships, grants and loans, that money will be refunded to you. You can have that sent to your action card, to a bank account, and there may be a way to receive a check. Refunds get sent out 10 days before classes start.

You apply to the HC after acceptance. You are accepted if you have the minimum req’ts.

You still have to submit the app. The app is easy. The essay isn’t really an essay. It’s just a couple of sentences introducing yourself. Dont waste time on it.

Rarely do large state univ have on-campus housing for upper-classmen because those units would be vacant. Upperclassmen don’t want them. A school with 25,000 undergrads is not going to have 20,000 dorm beds…no way.

Some sophomores do choose to stay on campus. This fall, a new 900+ bed super suites dorm is opening, so that will relieve much of the housing pressure.

But, the truth is…most kids WANT to move off campus after frosh year. The university area has MANY FABULOUS off-campus student apt complexes that are so amazing that kids WANT to live there. While the on-campus super suites are very nice, these off-campus student complexes are like resorts. lol

The truth is, dorm housing can be a pain in the tush…moving in and out each fall and spring can be a drag. Students and parents like to have their kids move to nice-off-campus housing after frosh year, because often the 12 month cost is the same…and there is only one “move in” and one “move out” for the rest of the college years. AND…(this is important to many parents)…having the child in an apt means that the parents have someplace to bunk for free for visits. lol

The school has lists of these off-campus student complexes, but seriously, most frosh students quickly learn from friends where they WANT to move off-campus. Its’ not a mystery…the fabulous places are well-advertised and easily seen.

the school does have a website to help find off-campus housing
http://offcampushousing.ua.edu/

Many of these complexes have buses that take kids to campus.

This is just a tiny list of the MANY off-campus student housing venues. There are a LOT of them… And there are cheaper less-frills/no-frills safe and clean choices as well.

^ Probably better on the Bama pages instead of NMF …

^^^
I was responding to the question regarding concerning off-campus housing for upperclassmen. This thread is only about Bama, so why would it be a big deal to mention???

I’m guessing that the person asking is the parent of a NMF child who is wondering how housing works after frosh year. the parent seemed to be concerned about that. It’s a common fear when one hasn’t visited a campus. The though of Johnny or Susie suddenly being off-campus can be scary until you learn that there are many wonderful off-campus options.

I asked the question. Sorry if it was the wrong board. I haven’t been to campus. I am waiting to see if I make finalist and then trying to decide if I should shoot for another school that gives money to finalist. Kids I have talked to seem to like Bama. I really want a small liberal arts school but money wise that might not work out so I am still looking at options that might still be open.

Hsgrad…

You’re fine. It’s a Bama thread. there’s no harm at all in asking a Bama related question. Don’t worry. NO harm at all.

Mom2collegekids- or anyone else who knows… Why does Bama have so much aid for NMFs and good stat students? I was under the impression that state schools didn’t have much merit aid to give out, and that obviously isn’t always the case. Any idea where that funding comes from?

Comes from donors and the profits from a very successful athletic program.

the money does not come from taxes.

The NMF scholarship is still available.

And if you’re an Eng’g or Comp Sci major, you get an add’l $2500 per year on top of the big NMF scholarship.

The NA scholarship is also still available.

Bump :)

both NMF and NA scholarships are still available. The app is very easy…no essays, no LORs needed. Takes like 5 minutes.

Bump

Bumping for the last few days that the offer is available. Must apply and name Bama by the end of the month.

Interesting. Is this only for students who already accepted to Bama and want to try to get into these programs now … or can an applicant start from scratch and apply to Bama and these programs now?

(It’s great Bama keeps the window open so long!)

if a student applied NOW and contacted Bama, the award would be given.
