Is there any chance we could eliminate the “What are my chances forum?”
Almost all responses come directly from students themselves, with the occasional parent. As many have already pointed out, it is impossible to “estimate” chances for an applicant, even if one is an admissions officer, because so much changes from year to year with each new applications crop.
Some of the Chances threads do receive good feedback, i.e. “Raise your SAT score to be competitive”, “Try and get Captain for that varsity sport you’ve been doing for 4 years”, and so forth. Instead of the “Chances” forum, I suggest an “Individual Feedback” or “Profile Feedback” forum, where users can post their stats/ECs, and the focus is not about getting “chanced” (it has become a verb!), but receive feedback from others about what parts of their application they still have time to work on.
Frankly, I’m quite tired of seeing these chances forums (even though I am guilty of posting them myself!). Such a move would be beneficial for the CC community as a whole.

To put it bluntly, that’s the stupidest idea I’ve heard. The Chances Forum is one of the sole reasons people come to CC.

No! I like it, and so do many people. And just like dvlfnfv5 said it is the reason so many people are on this site.
i agree. in the chances forum, almost everything is based on opinion, and 99.9% of people that post in threads like “Can i get in at these colleges” have no clue whatsoever about the admissions at given schools. even though it’s so interesting and exciting to many, it’s deceptive and useless.
this would not change anything, but we live in a free country, dont we?
I like the chances forum because it drastically reduces the number of “what are my chances posts” in the specific college forums.
I like the chances forum too. It helps underclassmen who have not yet applied to colleges get somewhat of an idea of what it’s like to be at the point of filling out applications. It helps them get the gist of what some colleges expect, and though it may not be completely accurate, it’s still useful information. I enjoyed reading through the chances thread.
people come here wanting to hear their chances.
banning the chances forum will not stop those people from asking their chances. so that’s not a solution.
the solution to the problem is just to put a big disclaimer on the board telling everyone not to make decisions based on this information, because it’s most likely faulty and most definitely opinion.
I agree completely with somebodynew. With a dedicated Chances forum, I can easily avoid the majority of “What are my Chances?” posts and actually read what I want.
