Band/Tall Flags Recruiting

We received the DVD and recruiting letter today from the band...my daughter plays piano so playing an instrument in the band is out (grin), but we're wondering if you have to have prior experience to join the Tall Flags? Are there auditions, or do you just show up for band camp?

I tend to think she'll choose other activities, but she was interested enough to wonder so I thought I'd inquire. Looks like fun. :)

From what I remember from last year, the audition for silks was rather informal. They just came to band camp a day earlier. Also, your daughter is welcome to pick up an instrument. I'm sure someone in a section she's interested in would be happy to help.

Thanks for the info. My husband was a music major -- he's been telling her for years "Join marching band, see the world," LOL. We've got a trombone and a flute around here, maybe she could do a crash course over the summer. :)

I got that letter too! But I also play piano. >_<

The letter says a small portion of the band follows the football team. How do they determine who's in this portion?

It depends on your year. The different classes get to go to different games. Senior class gets first pick- last year they went to Hawaii. All of the band goes to the Stanford/Berkeley game and the Notre Dame game when it is away.
