Band...

Hey forum,
So im currently getting all A's except for one B+ in band...
Im a freshman right now and Im wonderinf if i shud switch to something else...
would colleges rather see band than other electives or shud a b in band not affect me much since they take my core classes... just that 4.0 is attractive

If you enjoy band stay with it. Otherwise find something that you enjoy more. How is it graded? Is it a combination of daily participation, playing tests and events like concerts, marching band/pep band etc.? Is there some component where you are not getting full credit?

its a combination of participation and playing test … I don’t like the way participation is graded because there is no discrete choice and it just depends on what the teacher feels like… im positive i could get A’s in other electives but band seems like the common one for everyone… i dont want to be taking useless electives…

It’s your choice. Band is probably no different than any semi-serious non-core elective.

really? many people join band and do marching and stuff… but would it be fine staying in band but getting a B+?

The real question is do you enjoy band? Do you take music lessons? Is this an area of your interest? If so, keep band. If not, try something else.

Have you thought about talking to the band director on how you can improve your grade?

I had a HS band director that had a crush on the blond girl that was not great on flute, but he had her a chair ahead of me. We both got A’s, but it was very demoralizing on the blatant favoritism. I would win chair challenge, then the next day he would have us both play a little segment during band and he would switch us back (didn’t matter how badly she played). It affected me in a negative way. In hindsight, I wish I had continued private lessons with a great teacher - just didn’t see any up side at the time.

Both my DDs are playing in college band and concert band - majoring in other things, but it gives them a great social life.

At your HS, try to take advantage of every opportunity extended to you (IB or AP courses). See what great students ahead of you have done and make yourself a great HS student so you can then move on and be a great college student.

Good luck.

Is there more to your participation grade than being there every day, attending required events and having a reasonably good attitude? Sectional attendance?
