Im planning on setting up a bank account for college, so I was wondering, which banks are easy and accessible around the UCLA campus?

Bank of America
You get free checking and savings if you open it up in Westwood!

There are BoA of ATMs in Ackerman, near Northern Lights... um, where else? Yadadada

i like bank of america.

however, there is a washington mutual atm in covel. so perhaps it is more convenient.

there are wamu, wells fargo and bofa atms in ackerman and that center near bunche.

bofa is right outside of campus.

Don't you get free checking from BoA as long as you sign up for the student checking account?

its all about WF!! wells fargo baby!!

i dont like wells fargo. from what i hear they like to charge a fee for every little thing.

my personal suggestions (in order):
WaMu - free checking. free checks. no strings attached. open online together with a statement savings account and they give you a nice 5% APY interest rate on the savings. ATMs on campus.

BofA - Campus Edge checking is free for 5 years if you're a student. they have an online only promo right now where MyAccess checking is free with NO direct deposit requirement, but you have to open it online. ATMs on campus.

Citi - they have a college checking account, but its not really well documented online at all. but if you apply for an e-Savings and EZ checking together online, monthly fees and per check charges are waived for EZ checking. plus e-Savings give you a nice 4.5% APY interest rate. no minimum balance. no on campus ATMs, but theres a branch in westwood.

Wells Fargo - College checking is free only if you select online statement delivery. $1 fee each month for debit card use on the college checking account. regular basic checking is free with direct deposit. ATMs on campus.

i personally have WaMu and Citi.

wells fargo is annoying, plus they have NO atms in westwood.
they do have that random one out by pauley... but it's not in westwood so what's the point?
i wanna switch my bank account at some point...

anyways, i hear good things about BofA and WaMu, so i say you can't go wrong with either of those.

actually wells fargo is on gayley and kinross or something. by bel air camera

If you're living on campus, wamu is nice because there's an ATM on the hill. You have to go down to Ackerman for the others (unless you get an account at university credit union, which also has an ATM on the hill, though the only one I know of is in Hedrick).

theres a wells fargo atm in rieber. and wamu is in covel. and yeah, UCU in hedrick.

but who uses cash nowadays anyways? its all about bruin card, debit card, and credit card. :D

BofA is good because there's atms everywhere in california. THe downside, they charge for everything. Savings account fee for BofA is like 3.00/month if balance is below $500 or something. So toss that idea out the window. Checks are kind of expensive, i'd buy it elsewhere, about $10 for like 2-3 books. But student checking is free for 5 years. Not to mention, there's a $1.00 monthly statement charge, so just request online statements to get rid of that fee.

I would recommend just opening up a checking account to pull out money and write checks. Other than that, a reputable online savings account that is fdic insured will yield nice 5.00%apr or higher rates.

wamu. atms on campus, big branch in westwood, free.

Oh crap. I should really read up on those BoA fees...

There is a $100 incentive for BoA if you open a college checking account. Search on slickdeals.net to find more info about this.

JPNguyen, do you have a reputable place you can recommend buying checks from? And our BoA doesn't charge for statements or the savings acct associated with checking acct no matter the balance; you might want to ask at your branch.

As for savings accounts, try HSBC Direct. No minimum balance, FDIC insured, and uh 5.05% interest!!! BoA will pay you .40%. I'd know. My sister has a BoA savings account. It's pathetic. And none of that tiered interest crap.
