Bank accounts/HSBC?

Being an international student,my parents opened an account for me at HSBC USA(premier) from our local HSBC account.

But their branches are 0.75 to 1 miles from campus.

Are there any HSBC ATMs on campus that I can use without paying a fee?

Anybody in Columbia uses HSBC

there aren’t any HSBC ATMs on or near campus but it seems that the Citibank ATMs in lerner hall don’t charge anyone a fee

Unless your bank charges you a fee for using someone else’s ATM (like bank of america…)

What would be the best banking choice for a new account near Columbia’s campus/in NYC? Citibank? (In terms of ease of use, branch locations, atm locations, etc.)

[My parents mostly use Wells Fargo/my current account is with Wells Fargo too (not much money in it so it doesn’t really matter), but a search on Wells Fargo’s site shows no branch locations in New York City - although they do have some ATM’s in NYC. Hence, we’re thinking of creating a new account for me with another bank.]

Citibank has an ATM in Lerner. The Citibank branch is also close. However, if your parents live in a place where there arent as many citibanks (boston, LA, etc…) Chase is also a really good alternative.

BofA is a huge pain 'cause the ATMs are so far away.

On another note, BofA and Chase use the nice ATMs that count the cash/scan your check for you so you dont need to fill out envelopes.

What kind of person deposits cash in an ATM? To the extent these are small amounts, can’t you keep it at home or in your wallet?

i used to deposit cash all the time in undergrad because my dad used to give me my allowence in cash. now i hardly ever deposit cash unless i have a hundred dollar bill i want to change out.

those new chase ATMs are freakin’ awesome though

Your dad should have made you pass a spelling test before you received your “allowence.”

Anyway, why would your parents give you cash? And how much was this that you couldn’t just keep in your wallet?

Columbia 2002, you have issues dude. In almost all your postings you have been rude and insulting to people. Tone it down buddy. Dont get so hyper.

And what kind of a loser visits undergrad chatboards 7 years after graduating from college? Guess your Columbia degree was only good to get a couch at home and an internet connection! LOL

Dont bother replying, i wont be reading your nasty responses!

Wow, I didn’t even know you could deposit cash at an ATM.
Unfortunately, my bank is local to D.C. Metro area only, so I probably couldn’t deposit anything anyway. It’s good to know, though. Learned something new today.

i can’t spell. deal with it. it clearly hasn’t stopped me from being successful in real life (thank god for computers and spell check!)

ummm, thanks, but i don’t need you sticking up for me

It makes you look bad when you make typos. There are a lot of anal-retentive people who judge you by your spelling and grammar – even in informal emails. Hell, it’d be a dealbreaker for me if some girl didn’t know how to spell.

…like you?

i’m not a girl and even if i was i wouldn’t be interested in u :P

…i have spellcheck in firefox and i clearly didn’t bother to correct it…because it’s not a big deal. i feel like you’ve complained about BS like this many times before…usually when you realize you’ve lost an argument/discussion.
