During my visit to USC, I only saw Bank of America but they charge a fee for everything according to my mother.

I was wondering whether there are other banks close by... (i.e. Washington Mutual)

Yeah, there are a few other banks around USC that you could use. There's a washington mutual up vermont.

a lot of people use the on-campus usc credit union, which is great if all you're looking for is a place to stash your cash (plus checking)

The USC Credit Union doesn't charge any fees, but make sure you ask specifically for their Free account when you open one there. The only problem with the credit union is that if you live out of town, you may have some difficulty doing your banking while away from campus.

Your other options are pretty much Bank of America, which is where many students bank, or Citibank (although I've never seen any USC student go there)

Bank of America is the best choice in L.A.

Its called Student Checking or something along those lines and if you open it up w/a Savings Account of something, there is no annual fee, etc. etc.

Bank of America has the most locations by far, sheer convenience factor and Online Banking is instantaneous

thats what i have (student checking with bank of america)
its really easy and practical, i love it.
i'd highly recommend checking it out (haha... "checking"... get it?!?) before heading to usc : )

I use the USC Credit Union for my checking... its easy - no negatives that I have discovered (so far...)

The only negative that I have discovered with the USC Credit Union is that there is a fee to use other ATMs even when checking your balance, this is on top of any fee the ATM already charges. I hadn't realized this before, so I'll be sticking to making withdrawals on campus except in emergencies.

Actually, Bank of America's student checking is free for 5 years only IF your parents already have an account with them. If not, then you can meet minimum requirements to avoid fees with them. I myself don't qualify for the 5 year free account, but since I have direct deposit I don't have to pay any fees.

We use the credit union. They are convenient (although not especially well located on campus), and money is taken directly from my account and deposited in my son's account. However, they are often sloppy in their work, and they need to be monitored. There were times when I made changes in the amount of money to be deposited and the credit union did not pick up on them, and one occasion they took twice the amount of money out from my account. So if you and your parents are willing to pay close attention the credit union is ok.

BofA is by far the most convenient in terms of ATM's since there's on right next to Commons in the middle of campus, plus a full-service branch near where most off-campus students live, plus another ATM across the street on Figueroa.

There is a Citibank off Vermont next to the Post Office too.
