My S got accepted ED. We are looking to open an account for him. What banks are available around (if not in) the campus? Thanks in advance.

There are lots of choices. We chose B of A. It has a small branch on campus (I think in Newcomb), a full service branch on the "corner", and also one in the Barracks Rd. shopping center. We tied D's acct. to ours, so that money can be deposited (or withdrawn) if need be.

We received a Parent Guide sometime during the summer before school began. Hopefully, you will get it also. It is published by the UVa Parent Program, and loaded with information about the school and community. It lists all banks, addresses, phone numbers etc. Also includes hotels, dining in the area...loads of information.

My d also has an acct with Bank of America.

We are out of state, there is a branch in our hometown, not to mention a lot on campus.

Thanks, caseyatbat and meredesfilles for your response. Bank of America is one of our preferences!! You've been of great help.

One more vote for B of A. It's worked great for us for three years, now. Campus job salaries can be directly deposited, and the branch in Newcomb is convenient!

Every single ATM and the like on grounds is Bank of America. So be aware while you certainly can work with other banks, using say an atm on grounds to withdraw money from a non BoA account has around a $2 service charge.

Campus salary deposits is a non-issue, the money can be deposited into any bank (and for that matter university only does direct deposit for most of on-grounds jobs, check is typically not an option).

Perosnaly the biggest drawback against BoA is that it's a relatively big bank chain with a fairly standardized aproaches if you will. e.g. BoA doesn't allow clients under 18 to deposit checks into their checking account on their own (many smaller banks use this as standard practice). While of course this example doesn't apply, I think it illustrates the general idea of what I'm referring to as far as their style of operation.

While BOA is omnipresent, there are serveral Suntrusts and Wachovias within a decent distance of grounds.

i have wachovia - mainly due to the fact that wachovia used to be the bank of uva, and then my first year, they changed to boa. there is a wachovia atm in newcomb, but i honestly don't recommend anything but boa UNLESS there are no boa by you at home. the closest boa to my house at home is like 10 miles away, while there are 34209348 other banks within a 1 minute drive. Honestly - its way too much of a hassle NOT to have boa at UVa, and as a first year, its a super hassle - being as you'd have to take the bus to get to a wachovia.

what about BB&T?
