Banking

This is a question for current Wake Forest students. I'm trying to figure out the best banking situation. When I visited Wake Forest, I noticed that Wachovia had an ATM on campus. If this is true, do most students bank with Wachovia? Part II of my question, is there a particular student credit card that you would recommend?

My son opened a Wachovia account last year before he started his freshman year because it was the bank on campus. His account "came" with a credit and debit card. He uses the credit card for emergencies (like when his car broke down and had to be towed) and also we have him purchase his books on it. His own spending money is in the checking account which he uses the debit with. It seems to have worked well.

do you know if there is a bank of america on or around campus?

I don't know, you could probably get on their website and check though.

I'm banking with BB&T because it's easier for us. My parents do corporate and private banking with them so it's just more convenient. I hope there is one somewhere near campus.

I'm going with Wachovia as well.

What I ended up doing was opening a small checking account at Wachovia for my husband and myself as we banked somewhere else. This allows me to transfer funds if needed. Wachovia seems to have really gone after the college market---my daughter's school also has Wachovia as the closest bank.

There's not just a Wachovia ATM on campus, there's a full service Wachovia branch on campus. I opened both a free student checking and a free student savings account. The checking account came with a check card that can be used just like a credit card, but the money comes directly out of my checking account rather than me getting a bill every month (I have yet to figure out how this is really different than a debit card, but they tell me that it is). I know that Wachovia also offers a student credit card that's free so long as you keep an account with them, but I never really saw the point in getting one.

I think that most students use Wachovia, but not all. And there is also another ATM on campus. I believe that it's a BB&T ATM, but I could be wrong.

to second ginnyvere: i'm about 85% sure the atm in benson is indeed a bb&t. however, for people with no preference between wachovia and bb&t, i'd definitely recommend the former because benson is not always open and there is that full service wachovia branch. my freshman year (not having a car there in order to go off campus) i found one odd but definite advantage to having the branch there to be that i could deposit money into my account at any time (by going inside or any time using the atm); not very many of my friends, at least, carry cash around, and so if we pay for things it's almost always by card. to pay each other back we write a surprising amount of checks, and freshman year it was great to have that on campus wachovia. however, that's not something that's ever really come up in conversation with others, so i don't know if that's an experience unique to my group of friends or not.

Hey--I don't go to Wake (I'm at Mercer) but live outside Winston-Salem. I work for BB&T over the summers, but my accounts have always been with Wachovia (employer of my dad).

Both offer free student accounts and try to target this age group. While BB&T is an excellent bank, it has more of a hometown and local emphasis--I'd actually recommend Wachovia because it has a much wider ATM network from when it bought First Union. It comes in handy when traveling...

Does anyone know if there's a Woodforest branch or atm anywhere near the campus? If so, would be a complete pain to get to every once in a while?

Personally, I've never heard of Woodforest, so I don't think that there's a branch anywhere around here. If the bank has a website, there's probably a way to check to see if there are any branches or atms around here. The zip code for Wake Forest is 27109, and I believe that one of the major zipcodes for the town is 27106.

there's a woodforest at the local wal-mart, i believe. probably not the most convenient choice if you're not bringing a car to school.

No woodforest here, I'm pretty sure. Bank of America is my first recommendation, but Wachovia is, I suppose, also fine since there is a full branch on campus. I don't have an acct with Wachovia, though.

haha haven't seen you on in while emsibdn!

i looked into it, and my suspicions were correct; there's a woodforest in the local wal-mart.

hmm... well I'll be. Interesting.

Hey willmington, yeah, long time no see. Been busy and incomunicado for quite some time... things cooled down. Haha. Like the "NJ--->Winston-Salem Fall '06."
