Banking

Which banks do current Penn students use?

I was thinking about getting a free online checking account that allows me to use any ATM machine for free. Would current students recommend this method - or do something differently?

I use PNC. They have tons of ATMs, but their employees are brain-dead. I dread going to the tellers to get stuff done. It's a trade-off. Then again, I'm from Canada, so maybe all banks in the U.S. hire retarded employees.

One must not forget that PNC also has an ATM in every Wawa store.

You can use your PennCard as an ATM card at either PNC Bank or SFCU (Student Federal Credit Union - Penn's own bank). There are plenty of SFCU and PNC ATMs around campus.

The ATM at Wawa is conveniently located (especially if you live in the quad) and does not have a surcharge. Use whatever bank gives you the best deal and don't worry about having to pay the machine's surcharge.

I love Wawa :)

PNC is the way to go for Penn banking, plus theres many locations all over the east coast. If you're coming from the West you might want another though for banking ease back home.

Is there Chase around there (near campus???)

No there isn't. but going downtown to bank isn't the end of the world. I use HSBC (I do a lot of traveling and PNC fubar'd my account while I was trying to use my card abroad). The only HSBC locations in Philly are near City Hall and in Chinatown. But I don't need to go very often (and when I do it's a great excuse to get out of the Penn Bubble)

Most people are just concerned with withdrawing money, and the PNC ATMs in Wawa are surcharge-free for ALL banks, not just PNC. So I have HSBC but I still don't pay ATM surcharges for my cash needs :)

I'm guessing there aren't any wells fargos anywhere near philly?

Wells Fargo only has offices downtown, and I have never seen an ATM. I use Wells Fargo at home in mn, but I opened a checking account with PNC when I went to Penn. It just seems a lot easier to me.

SUCKS! I have to change banks.
What are some popular big banks near campus?

BofAmerica? Citi?

I use wachovia, would be silly for me to get PNC or something else when there are none of those banks back home. there's a wachovia branch i think on 17th street and market, but with direct deposit you'll never really have to go i don't think.
