Banks at UCSD & Triton Plus Accounts

Opening a new account for our son and want to know which bank would be best as far as ATM's and ease of proximity at UCSD. Right now he's with Union Bank of Calif. and they don't have any near the school. Also, how necessary is it to have a Triton Plus Card? Do you find that this helps and is worth it or is a regular ATM card all thats needed. Thanks

TritonPlus is very useful for on-campus transactions; very fast and no need to wait for authorization and whatnot.

Is there a Union Bank on campus? I dunno.

As far as ATMs, I know there is a Washington Mutual, Bank of America and I'm pretty sure there is a Wells Fargo (not 100% though).

As far as the usefulness of Tritonplus... Don't know if its necessary, but it is pretty fast. AND I would have loved it the other day when the credit card machine at Jamba Juice was closed and I couldn;t use my debit...

USE Credit Union has a branch on campus as well as a few ATM's.

there's a wells fargo; i'd pick one for convenience both at UCSD as well as your hometown so he won't be inconvenienced during vacations.

i never had a tritonplus account since cash + debit + credit cards were enough. if he's a first-year student, he'll have dining dollars to balance on top of all that. if your son's a responsible-enough person to keep cash in his wallet, i don't see the need for tritonplus. some people might say there's an advantage at places like the bookstore, but the bookstore is also capable of charging things to student accounts upon presentation of an university ID (which he should be carrying around anyway).

tritonplus is great for laundry. no need to carry quarters around! :)

yea i love tritonplus for laundry, the coffee carts, and price center for food, even tho i have credit/debit too

there is a washinton mutual, wells fargo, bank of america atms on campus... as well as some credit union ones...

also there is a citi bank, wells fargo, washington mutual, and bank of america on the second stop of the nobel shuttle all near ralphs and whole foods...

triton plus is helpful... but if youre living on campus ... i dont think you would need it ....but in the end its refundable and lasts until you graduate ...so you might as well....

you can also buy cool electronics and stuff at the bookstore and it'll show up as "ucsd bookstore transaction" too haha
