I'm looking to open a bank account. Anyone know which banks are popular at Columbia? Like most convenient ATMs etc.

citibank is by far the most convenient since the atm's in lerner are citibank. there is always a table of bank reps set up outside lerner for a week or so after school starts so its easy to set up an account

however, if you want something that works well at home too (most likely at least), there is a bank of america at bway&110

washington mutual tends to be popular, they're less predatory than the others and don't charge foreign ATM fees.

citibank is pushed heavily during orientation, but i don't think they offer much that makes them special.

there's also a banco popular on bway&112 or so (if home for you is a place with a lot of puerto ricans you might like that)

I second Washington Mututal. I think there's one right across the street at B'way and 115th or 114th. The no fees at foreign ATM's is great. I'm with Wachovia because it's just about the only chain by my family, and I'm being eaten alive by foreign ATM fees at school--$2 a pop. The closest Wachovia ATM is down at like 56th and B'way.
