Banneker/Key already sent?

So has anyone from our of state heard anything yet?

actually one of my friends got a feb. 22nd date which i thought was weird (he’s instate). I’m engineering but i got march 5.

So then there are three dates after all it seems. That would mean the number of 400 on the website is probably still accurate.

Our d got Feb 22nd as well.

I’m in-state, majoring in civil engineering and got the B/K e-mail on the 11th with interview on March 2.

Last year invitations were sent via regular mail, but some of the colleges sent emails for receptions they were having with the interviews.

Also I remember them being staggered because there were multiple interview dates.

So, have only instate applicants heard thus far?

I called yesterday and apparently, everyone who will be recieving the Banneker Key scholarship has been notified

sucks for us :((

I’m truly disappointed that my son didn’t receive an invitation for the Banneker/Key scholarship. We live out of state but I thought his stats would definitely qualify him as one of the top 400 entering freshman. (He is 1st in his class of 150, 4.0 unweighted, has taken every honors course at his school, has taken/is taking 7 AP classes (our school only offers 9 though I’m aware many other schools offer a lot more); received a 36 on the ACT, National Merit Finalist, Eagle Scout, state qualifier in cross country). A few questions: Does anyone know if they didn’t invite out of state students this year? Would it be inappropriate to call the financial aid office and politely ask why he didn’t make the cut off? Does Maryland rank high schools as part of their evaluation?

I think you should DEFINITELY call. I don’t understand why your son didn’t make it either… he seems extremely qualified. They can’t do anything to you for asking, and they’re quite friendly (generally speaking).

Im not sure about the Out of State situation, but you can ask if you call…I would recommend the admissions office, since I tried getting in contact with the Banneker/Key “department” or whatever you call it, and still havent gotten a response.

Yea, I would be interested in finding out specifics on the cut-off and such - please post when you find out more from UMCP.

^ I don’t think that out of staters have heard yet. I mean lets be honest, if BJcollege’s son didn’t receive the invite none of us deserve to.

I sure hope only in-state kids have heard.

I would like to know if out of staters have been notified. I was hoping that my D might receive an invite. She has a 4.0 UW, 2340 SAT and 35 ACT and lots of ECs. She has taken the max in APs at her school. She is also a National Merit Finalist. Any word if OOS have been notified?

I wouldn’t be surprised if they are only offering the scholarship to in state this year. Let’s face it, it becomes very expensive to award free rides to OOS (at 36K per year). They had a huge amount of applicants and I’m sure they can fill their OOS quota by people who are willing to pat full freight.

I didn’t want to believe collegebound0202 so I called too. They said that if you haven’t received anything by email, you weren’t selected for the award. :(

The qualifications for b/k used to say it was for UMD students only. I think it was opened up at least 5 years ago to include OOS students. Mamajay may be right, though. Perhaps it is part of their lowering the % of OOS students they have??? They may be losing some awesome students if this is the case (see BJcollege and Risumaro above??) :/

Last year, BK scholarships weren’t really based on GPA or extracurriculars. I have no idea what they are actually based on but people from my school with 3.6/4.0 GPAs and few ECs received invites while people with 4.0s and fantastic ECs didn’t. So don’t take it as a sign of anything and don’t panic if you didn’t receive an invite. Really.

If that is the case, then they are probably based mostly off the content of your essays and your recommendations.

I only have a 2050 SAT and 33 ACT and 4.0 and ranked 589 and I got an interview for February 22nd… My essays were pretty awesome though!!!
