I am not in honors or scholars and I didn’t even get into the business school and I got this email. I am sorry to say that this has to be a glitch in the system.

Free tuition? Haha I wish…

This happened with another one of my schools…they emailed deferral notices early or something like that. Still not sure exactly what the story was, but it threw everyone for a loop.

If it is smallish number of kids, a token apology would be nice, IE mail a hat/poster. If it was every accepted student who erroneously received this email, they will be cleaning this up for weeks.

At least I’ve heard of no one who was rejected getting the email…it is strange that it is taking this long to send out an apology. Maybe they are considering how much compensation to give everyone for their mental anguish.

It’s especially weird because people called the office and they still haven’t sent out a correction…

And there are only 400 semifinalists, so I feel like they would’ve noticed had they sent it to way more than that.

The first B/K event starts tomorrow morning. The e-mail must have been a reminder message that was inadvertently misdirected. All B/K semi-finalist receive a full packet via USMail that was sent out some time ago.

This is a sick joke!!! I was soo pumped haha

Got the retraction email. Good news though, theres still hope for partial scholarships

Just got a RETRACTION email. With capital RETRACTION.

SO MEAN. i was so happy.

I would say in terms of apologies, this one gets a B- at best. How about instead of we apologize for any inconvenience…they just say,“We do apologize”. It isn’t about “inconvenience” – it’s about dashed hopes so just a plain “I’m sorry” with no other words like inconvenience would have been nicer. Turning off the computer now – enough internet for one day!

How many people received the email in error?

I’m almost not fully interested in UMD anymore because of this. It’s always been a tough decision between them and VT, but I think VT is going to win my attendance now!

Someone’s getting fired…

Haha jk, but seriously, this is an emotionally taxing mistake!

In terms of the retraction email, how about " We made a huge mistake…" Also the fact that they have concluded their scholarship process may or may not be good news.

To be fair, there is a banneker/key process, and it was pretty clear that this email did not fit into it. mistakes do happen, especially when the scholarship committee sends out thousands of emails everyday. this one happened to be a pretty painful one, but they did redeem themselves with an apology about three hours after the email was sent out. it’s not really worth it to dwell on the semantics of the apology.

We live 10 hours away. We have spent 3 hours trying to figure out if we needed to head that way. No one in Admissions or the Honors department stayed past 4:30 to correct this error. Really cruel mistake by UMD.

Both my son and my niece got these e-mails. Anyone have any idea what the people who got the e-mails have in common. Both kids in-state, different majors, one honors one scholars, one great activities and essays, one not so great essays and activities.

It’s pretty funny, I actually got the interview for the B/K Scholarship, so this email made sense to me. It was the retraction (Which they apparently sent to everyone, even those who received the real invitation) which worried me.

We received the email. Celebrated, not knowing the process as UMD was not a top choice (if we are being honest), but we thought we needed to consider it strongly now. Accepted to Honors College. UMD must work much harder to attract the scholastic talent as they strive to be recognized. Historic quality control issue with respect to having such an IMPORTANT notice go out IN ERROR to so many young adults. Raised hopes and then SECOND (perhaps more) poorly handled issue was the cold manner in which they “apologized”, similar to an apology for being out of a flavor of ice cream. UMD off list now. I’m sure they (nor our family) will lose any sleep. Others may follow. This event has financial impact. At least we have strong reason to eliminate the school, when that decision is often so difficult normally.
