Banneker Key Scholarship Interview Experiences

Thank u @momtimesfour and @jkeil911 !! It is really nice they called me, it shows how much they care for me! Definitely a winning factor when it comes to college decisions!

Really, it means the AO brought his or her work home with them over the weekend, too. I was concerned that if no one could get to the office this morning with the campus closed you guys would be left hanging. Ah, the power of laptops.

Is there a dress code for the interview day?

I’m not sure if there is a dress code, but definitely wear something nice and warm (specially in this weather). If a girl, I would consider putting a dress on, and if a boy, many of the students were wearing full get-up (tuxedos, etc)

^really??^ Tuxedos?

I was going to suggest to my son that he wear a sport coat and tie, but not his suit, and certainly not his tux!!

no tux needed, nor did i see anyone in tux. Sport coat and tie are sufficient, some guys wore suit and some came with a dark color sweater and khaki pants.

Sorry! I posted this really fast and I didn’t realize I had written tuxedos lol! PLEASE NO TUXEDOS! I meant to say that most of the guys were in suits and sport coats! omg sorry! Please don’t wear them!

Thanks! And we’ll make a point to avoid tuxedos - too funny.

Just got back home from UMD. Dress code was mostly business casual I would say. Boys were mostly button down shirt and slacks, some ties, some sport coats, some suits. Interviews were relatively short. No longer than 20 minutes. Everyone was very nice and chilled. Good luck!!

The interview was very easy. Even easier than your typical Starbucks interviews at top colleges.
The whole reception and student panel things were pretty informative; but if you’re too tired or want to do homework you can just go into the library without anyone noticing haha.

Apparently most BK interviews are very relaxed and “easy”, however my son’s experience was a bit different – the interviewer challenged him on every point he tried to make, to the point that my son’s exasperation must’ve been evident, because the interviewer said, “Don’t look at me like I’m evil! I’m just playing devil’s advocate – I want to provoke you.”

Another BK candidate who (we found out later when we compared notes) had the same interviewer also came out a bit shell-shocked – said the guy asked him about his ideas in his intended major only to cut him off as he shot them down, saying, “No one at the university level would be interested in that” or something to that effect. So there are at least two candidates who aren’t feeling so good about their interviews.

However, one of the students on a panel in the morning session commented (after several other students mentioned how easy and relaxed their BK interviews had been, urging the candidates to just have fun and enjoy the day), “My experience was not at all like what they’re talking about, but I ended up with a full scholarship anyway, so don’t worry if your interview isn’t like the others – it doesn’t mean it was a disaster.” So we’re taking solace from that…

Wow! That’s rough! Sorry your son had to go through that.

OMG! I’m desperate for the BK decision! I hope that they come out earlier like they did last year! I’m aiming for March 21 and March 28! Or somewhat in between! Got to be positive! :D

So nervous waiting for Banneker decision :S
My interview experience was super relaxed, great conversation.

Me too! Same here! Really relaxed… Hoping for the best! @kgoetz896 :D
