Banneker/Key Scholarship

Does anyone know how much was awarded last year for partial Banneker/Key Scholarships? I have heard from $8000-$14000. Also does it depend if you are in or out of state? Being OOS $8000 does not make University of Maryland affordable for me.

Thanks

33dmjjm,

DS is a B/K full scholarship recipient. They do not issue dollar amounts for B/K’s. It’s either full or partial.

The full includes: tuition, room, board, and books for all 4 years and increases each year as tuition and expenses rise.

The partial includes: tuition and books

It does not matter whether you are in-state or OOS. It will cover the cost of tuition regardless.

Banneker/Key Budget
The maximum annual amount awarded under the Banneker/Key Scholarship program shall not exceed the total of the University of Maryland cost of tuition, tuition associated-mandatory fees, on-campus housing (standard room), board (Campus Point Regular) plan, and book allowance. Should you choose a more costly Campus Plus meal plan, or a housing option (on or off-campus) where costs exceed those of the standard on-campus room charge, as listed below, you must personally meet the additional cost. The scholarship does not include miscellaneous fees charged by the University to the student (e.g. vehicle registration, late registration, student exchange or Co-op, graduation, health or lab). Please refer to the Schedule of Classes for a complete list of fees. Please also note that the Banneker/Key Scholarship can not be increased to cover the cost of required departmental fees (i.e. Applied Musician Fee, Architecture Fees, and Journalism Mandatory Fees).

The 2010-2011 scholarship value for undergraduate residents and non-residents are broken down as follows:

In-State Out-State
Tuition $6,763.00 $23,178.00
Mandatory Fees $1,652.44* $1,652.44*
Room/Telecom $5,714.00 $5,714.00
Board $3,885.00 $3,885.00
Books $1,076.00 $1,076.00
Total $19,090.44** $35,505.44**

Mandatory Fees include costs associated with maintaining and providing services related to Recreation

If you look on the University of Maryland website it says the following:

The partial Banneker/Key Scholarship provides a partial tuition scholarship each year for four years

I read this to mean that a partial scholarship only pays part of your tuition.

Am I reading this wrong?

I copied this from the Admissions website:
“The partial Banneker/Key Scholarship provides a partial tuition scholarship each year for four years. There is more than one award level for the partial scholarship.” (Obviously the full Banneker/Key covers much more than that.)
I’ve always had the impression that the higher partial tuition B/K amounts go to out of state students, but I don’t know that for a fact.

DD1 received a partial (she’s now a senior). It does not cover all of OOS tuition, but makes a big dent in it.

I had no idea there was a difference in the partial. I got my info from one of DS’s friends that received the partial B/K. Sorry to confuse or misinform :(
