Banneker/Key Scholarship

Hey everyone! I just recieved a notification letter from UMD telling me that I'm a semi-finalist for the Banneker-Key Scholarship. Does anyone know more about the selection process, like what kind of questions will be in the interview, essay topics, etc? Also, does anyone know how many people get these awards and what their sats, gpa, rank, etc is?

Anyone here also a semifinalist?

I also got in the Honors Program and the school of Music-- I'm planning a double major in Voice and Mathematics...

Congrats! Yeah, I just found out I'm a semi-finalist too! I don't really know anything about the scholarship or what they ask... They say in the letter that even if you don't get it you automatically get the next highest scholarship.

Does anyone know what that scholarship is and how much is awarded for it?

http://www.uga.umd.edu/admissions/finaid/scholarships.asp

From the website, I would assume the next highest scholarship is the Regents Scholarship.

Regents Scholarship
The Regents Scholarship is offered to a limited number of entering freshmen from Maryland to recognize their extraordinary academic achievements. This scholarship is jointly sponsored by the University of Maryland and the University System of Maryland, and is one of the most prestigious scholarship programs in the state. The award covers the cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, and a book allowance for four years. Offered late in the spring, Regents Scholars are selected from the most academically talented entering Banneker/Key Scholars.

same here... Banneker/Key + Honors + Music School (piano performance)...

I'm guessing the next highest scholarship is the President's one because Regents looks like it's only offered in the Spring...looks like $8000 per year.

See you guys there!

Could any current Banneker/Key Scholars tell a little about what the interview is like?

the next scholarship is presidents which went for 8 grand a year last year....you have about a 50% chance of getting the scholarship now...just dont act like a geek..if you try 2 act cool....youll probably get the full ride..thats what i did lol

OMG!!! i can't believe i got the invitation. so you have to act cool right. any suggestion?? I really want to get the scholarship. anyone care to share their stats?? I really want to see my chances now. Do the take into consideration your SAT scores now or is it just about the interview. ps.. my SATs are ridiciously low for this scholarship so I don't want them seeing it again.

if the next highest scholarship is the president's scholarship, then what is the regents scholarship and how do you get it?

UMD's site describes Regent's....sounds like a subset maybe of Banneker for instate kids only....?

Look at posts #6 and after in this thread for more info regarding interviews...

did just the banneker/key invites come out of did all financial aid letters? if it was just the B/K -- when do the other letters come out

The interview will be about whatever the interviewers find most interesting about your application.

Fun story about B/K interviews. I met my girlfriend at interviews...we talked while waiting for our turns (we were some of the last to go), voiced that if we had our way we probably weren't going to Maryland, and left thinking we'd never see each other again. Hehe.

the people that were semifinalists...can you post ur stats...i applied to CP and i think im a borderline candidate for this scholarship but i want to see how close or far i am from the people who were actual semifinalists.

^^ Sad truth is that the difference between you and the previous poster, other than your better SAT's, is the fact that they are a URM. They only offer these scholarships to everyone because the courts forced them to. Welcome to the real world my friend.

Here's D's stats....SAT: 2250; SATII: physics 800, Math II 790, GPA 4.0 uw, >5.0 weighted; 12 APs by the end of this yr; class rank 1/575...good ec's, etc..... just an average CC kid!

Just to let you all know, I will be helping out at the March 9th (the first one) interview day at the luncheon, and I'll probably be on one or both of the student panels.

Just make sure you wear a nametag that says "somebodynew"! How many interview days do they have? I assumed it was just one....how many students do they expect to come for the interviews?
