atlee, see my post #133 (previous page). The presidential (and other merit awards) are completely different.

i got the email but did recieve my letter yet
so if we get an int that means we have at least $8k a year, does anyone know how many students get the full ride

What email are you guys talking about?

I just got the B/K package in the mail, and that's it.

I got a B/K package, but no email. Strange, it seems like emails would be much faster to send out . . .

Last year there were ~275 B/K recipients, and about half get the full ride. The other half are guaranteed 8k and book allowance.

Departmental awards (i.e., engineering scholarships) come later. Not all departments give these, but engineering is known for them.

astrophysicsmom, I am writing you a long note (but have to cut it down to fit CC's 5000 character limit!)

einsteinprime...i thought u got in scholars not honors? how can you get B/K then?

So, no letter =/

Or do you think I just haven't received anything yet? I just want the anxiety to be over already.

samee. I got a letter in the mail and got excited just to find out that it was about Gemstone...
but i wouldn't start worrying yet

DS received an email from the dean of the life sciences department inviting him to a breakfast and meeting the day he comes for his B/K interview. There are three dates listed at the bottom of the email for the interview/breakfast/meeting.

The email does mention that those not selected for the full schloarship will receive the $8,000.00 a year scholarship.

^I got the same thing.

CountingDown-How did you get the information that about half receive full rides?

darn. no email for me either :/

Pons- My son received a congratulatory phone call from a UMDCP student as everyone else did, but then today he received a follow-up phone call from admissions because DS had a few other questions that the student could not answer.

We asked about the B/K scholarship and the timeline and he said that the semi-finalists would be notified this week and next, allowing at least a month for travel plans.

That makes me feel a little bit better but it's still incredibly nerve-wracking having to wait when other people are receiving their notification letters. Thank you though. Hopefully the letter comes sooner rather than next week.

abc1234567: "einsteinprime...i thought u got in scholars not honors? how can you get B/K then?"

So, I decided to ask them why I wasn't admitted to honors. It turns out that there was some sort of computer glitch that caused my application (along with many others) to not be reviewed for honors. They apologized profusely, and immediately admitted me to honors, gemstone, and honors humanities. I'm glad I asked. :-)

By the way, einstein != eisenstein

hmmm. That's curious. How did you find that info out, e-prime? Who did you call/talk to?

As weird as this may sound...

If we don't want the scholarship, can we just give it to someone else?

I'm just wondering, are you chances any greater if you made honors humanities? I am an out of state student with a 3.84 weighted (I know, a bit low for honors humanities) and I want to know what my chances may be of getting selected even as a semi-finalist. I would really love an opportunity to interview for this scholarship, as scholarships are essentially my only chance of going back east for college.

ElBlufer,

We are also out-of-state and my son was notified via email yesterday. UMCP website indicates that ALL Honors students are eligible for scholarships. I believe that certain departments may also award scholarships to add to whatever may have already been received. However, I am not sure if that would still be the case if a full merit B/K scholarship were awarded.

The online chat is tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. EST for Honors and Scholars. This may be a good time to ask any questions you might have.

what "online chat"?

They will have those chats for awhile on a weekly basis.
