Barbie Dolls - Love them or leave them (just for fun)

Yes! This describes my reaction to the trailer.

Like some on the thread, I was a good mix of Barbie-playing, tree-climbing, frog hunting and fishing. I had Crissy - loved the dolls where I could fix their hair, and also an impressive collection of Matchbox cars!

I never remember thinking that I should look anatomically like Barbie or thinking that she was the perfect female form. Sometimes I think adults, who in most cases are trying to do the right thing, introduce ideas in children’s minds that wouldn’t normally be there if not for the adult intervention.

Barbie, GI Joe and the like were great for groups of kids to play together and kept us busy for hours. I have such wonderful memories of growing up with virtually no boundaries in my daily play…outside for hours and hours without needing to text my parents or call to check in (my parents worked, and we knew better than to bother them with a phone call unless someone was dying!), no background checks on other kids’ parents or worries about being in a friend’s home…it was a different time.

My barbie was a “Stacie”. I was a bit of a tom boy, but I did love my Stacie and Crissy dolls.

I was into He-Man/MOTU action figures. I made them box each other… drew blood on their faces with a red felt-tip pen, wiped it off with Kleenex. Pretty bad@ss! lol

The results were pretty predictable though – the good guys always won.

Oh yeah, now I remember my girls had a GI Joe but called him John and he was always the bad guy.

I had a few Barbies and the girl next door and I would play on her screen porch (we were about 3-5 years old) We didn’t care much about boys since we had too many little brothers as it was.

My kids didn’t have many but did have Kelly dolls (like Little Kiddles from my day). The did have two Barbie videos, Swan Lake and the Nutcracker and we actually really liked them because the music was nice (oh so much better than listening to endless Barnie)

!!!

Our youngest pooled her Barbies with her neighbor buddies’ Barbies in our big bonus room, and the girls played non-stop for a year or so. The ten year olds quickly figured out how to film using stop motion animation function of our Somy camcorder and had a blast making animated movies about Barbies kicking Kens’ butts. Kens were the bad guys.

Does this bring back memories? Unfortunately, not a memory for me. I took this 2 min ago in one of our spare bedrooms.

My brother loved He-Man. I loved the cartoon, but was a bit old by then to play with figures. I don’t really remember playing with any kind of figures much, but I must have at least a little.

Did anyone else have the big Barbie head, where you could style the hair and put make-up on her?

I loved that. So many hours spent doing her hair…

80s - Grayskull
2010- Grayscale (GOT)

Well, for that matter:
1900s - Wormtongue
2000s - Wormtail

I am every decade’s nerd. So when I saw the Barbie trailer I was more excited for Simu Liu than the Barbie feet (feet were spot-on, though).

I was at a mall recently and I had a flash of momentary (and short-lasting) regret for my kid donating her AG dolls years ago. Why? The new Harry Potter merch!

I loved that! I did much more with her make up than her hair.
