BArch Vs. MArch. Which best suits me?

Environmental Science is really interesting for me, and Architecture is too. So I’m unsure if I should choose either one or wait for MArch degree?

In details, I’m about to take either of two paths:

BArch: - Just straight into Architecture major and immerse in what I love.
- While I have NO BASIS in Drawing, I have a great appetite for Art and I’ll start learning art classes outside school this March.

MArch: - I’ll major in Environmental Science which is also another thing that I really love. Then I’ll apply for Architecture school. So will I be allowing myself more time to decide between two careers? Or just wasting time for Archi and distracting myself between two fields?

  • Not sure if Environmental Science will help me as an Architect? Is it relevant?
  • I'll also start learning art classes outside school this March

Which of these is best for me in your opinion? (I have to decide before going to college as I’m applying to Canada, Egypt, and USA).

You may want to investigate the cost implications of the choice. BArch is a 5 year bachelor’s degree program. BA/BS in a non-architecture major + MArch is probably a total of 7 years. Investigate what financial aid and scholarships, if any, are available for each path. Of course, which schools you attend will also have a big effect on costs.

I think I remember you saying before that you were terrible at drawing and didn’t have a lot of artistic aptitude. Given that, do you think you should be thinking about architecture at all as a career?

Well I said I draw worse than a 3 month old kid but I have an aptitude for arts. Art History and History classes were my favorite classes. But yes,I don’t think ,at least, a BArch is a good choice for me for for drawing skills are not yet developed.

Art history is different from actual studio art, and history really has much less to do with architecture.

I’m not trying to discourage you from pursuing things you are really passionate about, but you have a lot of interests. It seems to me like you would be almost equally happy pursuing any of these various interests, and since you have so much choice it makes sense to play to your strengths.

You’re very right about this. Your help made me narrow my major choice to 2 so much thanks! Now If you were in my place would you pursue Political Science or Environmental?=D

i’ve got a kid whos looking at a bachelors in architecture - then will pursue a masters. looking at her class choices for her bachelors – there’s many drawing and art design classes that she’ll take. (thats what she loves). One school we looked at said the whole first year was all hand-drawing. We do know someone who went into architecture with a teaching degree . . . so you can get a masters in it, but will have to spend a year or so making up the needed undergrad classes. Landscape Architecture might incorporate your love for the environment . . . but will still need those basic drawing skills.
