My D has an audition for a local professional company for this musical and we don't know the music. The audition appointment call gave information about the content and parents of minors have to consent to their kids doing it,. We are OK with all that.
My question is, Does anyone have suggestions for musicals that we should look at for audition pieces?
We are told that musically it is similar to Rent with similar to Spring Awakening and we are not very up-to-date with the more modern/rock musicals. D is AA, not that that matters terribly but may open up a few ideas.
We have a few weeks to look up and prepare something for an early Jan audition.
Thanks for any ideas of where to look.

Bare is all up on YouTube! If you want to get a feel for the music and the characters, I would suggest looking there first. It has some really terrific music.

Something from "Tommy" would be good if you are a guy auditioning. Girls - maybe something from "The Life".

THanks. I don't really ever think of You Tube. I guess it's time I update my thinking. I think we night go with Dream Babies from the Me Nobody Knows,

you can do google video search and find the complete first act. do advanced search and only search in lengths over 20 minutes and it should be there. i watched it a few weeks ago and it's amazing. can't find act two though.. :(

Bare is very very pop. It might even be better to sing a pop rock song instead of one from a musical.

I love this music so much. Yes very pop. Hence "A Pop Opera"
I just ordered the studio recording yesterday and I can't wait for it to come in.

The studio recording is great. I am listening to it now. I was considering using Role of A Lifetime for an upcoming audition where we need a contemporary MT song.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I was wondering if someone could email or PM me with sheet music and/or audio file of Roll of a Lifetime. I love the song a lot, but I don't want to pay over $50 for both the CD and the music book.

I realize that people exchange music, but you need to learn that buying music is the cost of doing business in this field. If music is out of print, that is one thing, but if it is available, that is another issue entirely.

Many new young composers are using the internet to promote their new works. If you "get" the music from someone else who bought it, you are depriving them of compensation that is justly theirs.

And - if you work in theatre, buying music becomes a business expense, which can be deducted on your taxes.

Well we just got the audition requirements and it is a good thing she has the break to prepare. They want two contemporary monologues and a third prepared in case and two contasting songs 16 bars, and 12 bars.
If D was on the college audition circuit this would be fine as she would have all of these, but she is a year young now and doesn't have lots, particularly monologues, ready to go. She has relied on being a strong and known dancer locally so has been rather lazy about keeping up on the other areas. This should serve as a good jumpstart for her to sharpen up all areas.

Keepingcalm, she sure will have a jumpstart to have to find monologues now!

My D has found that other than auditions to get into college or while at the college or StrawHats, most casting MT auditions do not require monologues. Most have had singing and then callbacks often involve a cold reading of a scene, and/or a dance call. Reading sides for a scene seems more common than preparing monologues in real world MT auditions, from her experience.

I was surprised at all the requirements also, but the theatre typically does dramas with an occasional musical so that probably has something to do with the three monologues. And as I looked at the different clips and we researched more about the production, my guess is it could be pretty bad if you had weak actors.
But she seems very fired up to look for some new stuff and willing to consider more meaty material than usual so it will all be good no matter what the result is.

Well D sucessfully survived the audition and got an immediate call back. D's nervousness takes the form of physical ailments and a great deal of negative thinking, so maybe I should have said Husband and I survived her audition as she was painful to live with for the week before. She is going to have to figure out how to deal with the stress more positively otherwise we will all be at each others throats when she is doing college auditions.

In the end it was quite helpful to have to find several different monologues so early on. She now has about 6 contemporary monologues that she can choose from that should still work next year. It was also helpful to find ways to go about finding them. Now we wait on the outcome, but once at the theatre to auditio and after she felt good about the whole thing.

A final update. D was offered a part tonight and was thrilled and in some amount of disbelief. So if anyone is checking out MT programs in southern Ohio (there are several) in April (basically runs the entire month), look up the Know theatre in Cincinnati and stop in to see it.
This will be the first show with this company for the family but they typically get great reviews.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR DAUGHTER, KEEPINGCALM!! I have been wondering how it all turned out. How terrific for her!! She must be very excited at this opportunity. It should be a great and new experience for her. Being involved in adult theater, particularly a quality company, is very worthwhile for a teen. Good for her!

Keepingcalm--Congrats to your daughter!! How exciting!! Wishing her all the best in this new adventure!!

Congratulations!! Know Theatre is a very well respected company. I hope that Bare, The Musical will be a great experience for your D.

Thank you all. She is looking forward to it.

Here's another up-date if anyone is interested. They have finally started rehearsing just this week for an April 3 opening. So D has some very long days, but only for a couple of weeks.
This weekend all the actors finally are in town, and Pam Myers who was a Tony Nominee for the original run of Company, is Claire (the morther). D thinks there is another equity contract but doesn't know who it is.

As many of you said the music is great. D is loving working on the show and the music. But for those looking for Role of a Lifetime, it is not in the show, or at least the version they are using.
