This is not a question that applies directly to this school but all the schools. Is there a preference to tenors vs. baritones? Because many of the guys i knew who get into the programs are tenors. However many of the shows they do require baritone parts. So i just wanted to know.

I know that Connor Gallagher who graduated last year is a baritione.

hey there,
my name is joe and i was accepted to CCM this year and will be attending next year. I have noticed that too. so far my entire class is a bunch of tenors and baritenors.....i am the only bass baritone. I have no idea if they have any sort of preference for tenors, but obviously that is a much more marketable vocal range. Ah well....i am happy with my voice....and maybe being one of the few bass baritones on campus will bode well for me

what is the vocal range to be considered a baritenor?

yeah I was wondering that too! My vocal range is an A flat2-G4 but I can go all the way up to a high E in my falsetto.

Nate, you would probably be a baritone. falsetto doesn't count when it comes to your vocal range because basically anybody can hit a large range of notes with their falsetto. Also, your vocal range doesn't really mean what notes you can hit on a "good day", its what notes you could hit on a regular basis and your comfortability with those notes. I can go up to B4 on a daily basis, but I can't sustain it for too long, nor do I even know if it sounds good or on pitch.

You can familiarize yourself with your upper register with some vocal coaching. I started vocal coaching about a 2 years ago and when I started I could only hit an F#4, whereas now, with the right singing technique, there is an A4 and A#4 in my singing range :D

Best of luck with your voice-identity crisis :D

while i am not in CCM, i do take many classes within the college, and the majority of my friends are musical theatre majors. they are always saying how they need good baritones. the only problem is, most guys who consider themselves baritones are not. they are just belting tenors like everyone else who happen to have a few low notes, THIS IS NOT A BAD THING BY ANY MEANS!!!!! But for those of us real baritones, i'm a lyric baritone, it can play into our favour! But the main thing at CCM is TALENT, If you have a great voice, it shouldn't matter what vocal part you can sing, the point is you can sing! Pick songs that show your voice well, never do show-stoppers or huge numbers, keep it simple. A former CCM faculty member, who i take voice from, told me: "if it was on Broadway in the past 5 years AT LEAST, don't do it." this might be extreme, but he was in the musical theatre department! Break A Leg to everyone!
