**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (CR/M/W): 2200 (740/680/750) and (710/710/710)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT IIs: 790 Lit, 720 USH
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0 or 100): 3.5 or a 90.02
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Eng. Literature (5) AP Eng. Language (5) AP US History (5) AP Microeconomics (5) AP Macroeconomics (5) AP Biology (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, honors lit, honors social studies, college course, and physics

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (leadership in parenthesis): Newspaper (Editor, Columnist), Model UN (Head Delegate), Social Studies Honor Society
[] Job/Work Experience: Work exp essays talked about how I work after school everyday to help my mom bills.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutor at ethnic youth empowerment organization, Intern at local courthouse.
[] Summer Activities: Enrichment program for economics, Feminist enrichment program
[] Barnard Essays + Common App: ‘Why Barnard’ was persuasive; I talked about how my religion impedes female empowerment and how this led me to want to go to a woman’s college. Also discussed some specific programs I’m interested in and mentioned that I participated in Barnard Bound. ‘Famous Women’ picked an important congresswoman. ‘Community/Ethnic’ talked about how my female family members are from third-world countries and resistant to feminism–how I want to change that. Common App essay was intense and personal; talked about why my parents are separated.
[] Teacher Recommendations: Hmm… My social studies teacher might have written a great one because she interviewed me and was taking really good notes. She’s also a really good writer. My math teacher probably wrote a mehhh one.
[] Counselor Rec: I read it. She focused in on ethnic diversity.
[] Additional Rec: Additional rec from a Barnard professor, my manager at work, and a prof at my community college class (that I’m not sure got sent…).
[li] Interview: Ahh… My interview was so-so/not very good if you ask me. I talked a lot more than she did and ranted a lot… It lasted like 45 minutes? At the end, I tried to connect with her, but failed miserably and quite obviously. I didn’t know much about her major.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State: NYC
[] Country: USA, durf
[] School Type: Competitive public.
[] Income Bracket: ~17,000
[li] Diversity Status (URM/legacy/first generation college, etc.): I’m asian, totally not a URM, but I talked in my essays about how its a third-world country. First gen college.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflections[ul]
[] Strengths: I really played the diversity status in my essays. Talked a lot about my academic area of strength (social studies) in relationship to feminism and how my parents immigrated from a developing country. I also think that my ‘unafraid’ essay was a really great piece of writing and very poignant.
[] Weaknesses: I was worried for a while that they might be turned off by how I blatantly revealed how great my financial need is. My GPA is also pretty low, but I explained why (my parents separating) in my Common App Essay without making it sound like an excuse.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think the extra recs were most deff my hook, if not anything else. I just kind of tried to fill my application with hooks! Really focused on ethnic diversity, feminism, and low-income. I talked a lot about wanting to “catalyze change.” I desperately hoped that using so many hooks wouldn’t be too obvious haha
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I had already applied to my safeties: SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Stonybrook and CUNY Macaulay Honors. If I hadn’t gotten in, I would’ve applied to Cornell, NYU, Wesleyan, Vassar, and Trinity

[li] General Comments:[/ul] I tried so hard to get in. My GPA was so weak (I have C+s EVERYWHERE science/math related), but I tried so hard. My acceptance has made me a firm believe in the fact that if you try hard enough, you can do anything. Ahhh this was a TIRING run, but so rewarding. I got sick from the anxiety (literally). But now I’m really happy and really looking forward to finishing senior year and attending Barnard! Already looked through the First-Year Guide!! Looking forward to the open house! You know who will be stalking the campus allday errday now ;)))
[/li]

For all those who didn’t get in: Remember that there is a HAPPY place for each and every one of us. I honestly believe that disappointment is only a veneer for serendipity. GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU RD-ERS!!

WOW
congrats!
I’m sure you worked really hard.
I hope I get in too. Although I feel like its a rejection.

I’m assuming based on the website. Considering the fact that I’m already enrolled I really doubt otherwise.

Gay Straight Alliance 9-12 (Officer 11-12)
Gender Equality Club 11-12 (Co-Founder and Vice President 11-12)
Philosophy Club 10-12 (High Council/Officer 12)

Human Rights Club 12
Some other assorted clubs I barely participated in, including Computer Game Creation Club (AKA Play Halo in the Computer Lab Club) in 9th and Adopt-a-Grandparent Club (I went to one meeting and it showed up on my transcript) in 10th.
[] Job/Work Experience:
Junior Counselor at Summer Camp 9, 40 hours/week
Poll Worker at November District Elections 11
Sales Associate at Five Below 11-12, ~10 hours/week
[] Volunteer/Community service:
Volunteer at MANNA
Volunteer at Philadelphia Gay Bingo
Volunteer at Philadelphia AIDS Walk
Volunteer at Walk Against Hate
Volunteer at New York City Food Film Festival 2010
Other various strange activities, including taking discarded books out of the library dumpster and donating them/giving them to friends.
[] Summer Activities:
Advanced Creative Writing Workshop at Columbia University, Summer 2010
Administrative Assistant at Columbia Teachers College, Summer 2011
[] Barnard Essays + Common App: I thought my Barnard supplements were great. My common app essay was a bit more subjectively good, though - I wrote two common app essays and brought them to the stiff, edit-out-the-emotion writing center editor and my quirky Euro Lit teacher who’s all about making it about you. One of them was loved by the editor and hated by the teacher, the other was hated by the editor and loved by the teacher. I chose the latter, and apparently I made the right choice!
[] Teacher Recommendations: I think they were good but I had to waive my rights. I had both of them for two years so I think they knew me pretty well.
[] Counselor Rec: Once again waived, but I have no doubt that it was glowing. I’m really close to her. She wrote one specifically for Barnard!
[] Additional Rec: Didn’t submit one. I think having too many recs can seem like you’re overcompensating.
[] Interview: I was gushing SO much about my love for Barnard that she might have thought I was crazy. I also told her I planned on majoring in something poli sci-related because I didn’t see an English major as being applicable…and guess who was an English major? My foot and my mouth became very close friends. But I met with the admissions officer for my area several times and we got along swimmingly.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State: Pennsylvania
[] Country: USA
[] School Type: SUPER competitive public
[] Income Bracket: $100-200k
[] Diversity Status (URM/legacy/first generation college, etc.): My mom goes to Columbia Teachers College but I don’t think that counts as a hook or legacy. Unless being a twin counts as diversity, then nada.
[/ul]Reflections[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, ECs, and (probably) counselor rec.
[] Weaknesses: Test scores, GPA, the fact that I took low level math and science classes, and basically everything math-related on my application.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly don’t know. I got to know my admissions officer very, very well, so that could be it. But I’m pretty sure if I ever posted a “chance me” thread for Barnard everyone would tell me I couldn’t get in, hence the fact that I don’t believe in “chancing” people unless it’s totally numbers-based (eg: a huge state school).
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at Penn State, University of Pittsburgh, and Temple University. None of that matters now, though!

[li] General Comments:[/li]I think this is pretty solid evidence that numbers aren’t everything. I felt like such a pariah among the 2200+ SATs in the ED thread, and my school is incredibly competitive - the three girls I know from my school who went to Barnard last year either have super high GPAs or are varsity athletes. If you look at me on the Naviance graph I’m among a sea of red Xs. But I really showed how much I loved the school, I got to know my admissions officer, I went to classes at Barnard, I kept in touch with professors, and I wrote strong essays that highlighted my strengths and ignored my weaknesses.

I’ll admit, I feel bad considering the fact that most of my friends were rejected or deferred from their uber competitive ED schools. But I’m elated and I cannot wait to see all of you wonderful ladies in the fall!
[/ul]

amurd – what about your sister? Accepted as well (I hope)?

Decision: ACCEPTED!!! :)

•Senior Year Course Load: AP Literature and Composition, AP US Government, AP Spanish Language, Calculus, Constitutional Law, Advanced Theatre

Subjective:
•Extracurriculars:
Theatre 9-12 - Acting 9-12 (at school, regional, and community theatre), Directing (Directing several student-written shows 9-12, Assistant Director for Fall Play 11), Sound Design (nominated for Cappies award for Sound Design), Hair and Makeup 9-12 (Chief Hair and Makeup Designer and Coordinator for several elementary, middle, and high school shows11-12), Stage Managing 10-12

The Cappies 11-12 (Best Regional Junior Critic 11, Lead Critic 12)

•Job/Work Experience: I did a community theatre show that I got paid for the summer before my junior year. I also worked filing medical records at a local doctor’s office one summer.
•Volunteer/Community service:
Volunteer at Garage Tutoring
Volunteer at Angel Food Ministries
•Summer Activities:
Shakespeare in the Park, Summer 2010
Acrylic Painting Workshop, Summer 2010-2011
•Barnard Essays + Common App: Writing is one of my strong points, so my essays were all well-written. But, they were really simple. I didn’t talk about my accomplishments or anything that profound…it was just normal every day stuff.
•Teacher Recommendations: Well, I waived my rights to read them, but I think they were good…?
•Counselor Rec: Also waived my rights…I don’t know how great this one was because I don’t know her that well, unlike the teachers who wrote my rec.
•Additional Rec: I submitted one from my theatre teacher…again, waived my rights.
•Interview: It went pretty well…it was a bit uncomfortable because there was an current senior and admissions woman in the room to “oversee the student”. But, she ended up asking me a bunch of really specific, hard to answer questions about myself. It was a little awkward, but it still went pretty well. I actually think the admissions counselor liked me more than my interviewer because I tend to get along with adults better than people my age.

Other
•State: California
•Country: USA
•School Type: Independent
•Income Bracket: No clue…
•Diversity Status (URM/legacy/first generation college, etc.): White, North African, and Armenian…first generation to go to college on my dad’s side.
Reflections
•Strengths: Essays, probably teacher recs, 10-12 grades, English, Reading, and Writing ACT Scores.
•Weaknesses: Math and Science ACT Scores, 9 Grades, Lack of Well-Rounded Activities
•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good question…don’t really know how to answer this?
•Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at University of San Diego
•General Comments: YAYYYYY!!! :D

Calmom, yep, my sister was accepted as well! We certainly don’t plan on rooming together but I’m incredibly excited to go to Barnard with her. :)

Well congrats to her as well, then! You definitely should not room together – in fact I would recommend that you specifically request to be housed on different floors. Students tend to meet the others on their own floor first, and if you are on different floors, you will widen the circle of new friends – since it is certain that you are likely to still spend time together and meet each other’s friends.

Also, if you are identical it will be less confusing for the others on your floor if they aren’t always running into both of you. ;)

I WAS ACCEPTED TOO!!! noloserhere’s prophecy came true :open_mouth: CAN’T WAIT TO MEET YOU GUYS!! WE’RE GOING TO BARNARD TOGETHER!!!

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: showed a TON of interest
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:tulane w/27,000, michigan

[*] General Comments:[/ul] so excited!

It seems like a lot of accepted/deferred/rejected ladies (and oh, there are many) that haven’t posted here a lot so I decided to finally get the ball rolling again and post my stats.

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (CR/M/W): 590/670/660 (1920)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT IIs: Bio-M: 740; Math I:690 (I also sent Math II, which was a 660, but specified on my common app that I wanted to show my Bio and Math I)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0 or 100): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Bio (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: Honors Calculus, Honors Physics, AP Environmental Science, AP US History, AP Literature, and Japanese IV[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (leadership in parenthesis):
Literary Magazine (Editor and Graphic Designer; 9th-12th)
Choir (Section Leader and Soloist in Spring and Winter concerts; 9th-12th)
Student Council (Secretary; 10th-12th)
Japanese Honor Society (Member; 10th-12th)
[] Job/Work Experience:
Japanese Tutor (4 months in 10th)
[] Volunteer/Community service:
Volunteered at hospital (100+ hours, Summer of 11th)
Volunteered at science museum (100+ hours, Summer of 11th)
[] Summer Activities:
Did all my volunteer work in the summer, as well as an AP Bio prerequisite course summer of 10th, and Algebra II course in summer of 9th
[] Barnard Essays + Common App: Really kickass. My common app essay was about a personal moment where I realized that everything is eventually forgotten. My Why Barnard supplement highlighted their learning style and how that carries beyond the college years; I chose Quan-Am, the first female Buddha, as the woman I wanted to talk with; for my unafraid supplement I wrote about the first time I ever crossed a street alone; and for my community supplement I wrote about how the street harassment I face as a young woman in my neighborhood has empowered me to defend other’s and their rights.
[] Teacher Recommendations: Really really wonderful. I got my Bio/current AP Enviro teacher and my British Lit teacher to do it (both female) and they highlighted a lot of my personal attributes.
[] Counselor Rec: I really don’t know.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[li] Interview: Went wonderfully, I really connected with my regional adviser in my interests of study (she had the same interests when she attended Barnard), was really honest about my enthusiasm, and even recommended a book for her that she was very interested in.[/li][/ul]

Other[ul]
[] State: NJ
[] Country: USA
[] School Type: Public school with around 400-500 students. Somewhat competitive.
[] Income Bracket: Not 100% sure, but we’re pretty middle-class.
[li] Diversity Status (URM/legacy/first generation college, etc.): I’m a 2nd generation Asian, and my father works as an IT developer at Columbia U.[/ul]
[/li]

Reflections[ul]
[] Strengths: My extracurricular and community work is small compared to others, but I have a lot of dedication to them. But I think my strengths are my personality and writing, since I objectively believe I have a unique view to stand over other applicants. I am in no way a cookie cutter Asian.
[] Weaknesses: My scores and my transcript has a few B+'s littered here and there.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Solely I believe that I got in because of my personality that I really worked hard to show in my writing and interview. My scores are on the low end of the middle 50% and with those alone I don’t think I had a chance of getting in. A lot of people may also try to believe that my father guaranteed my acceptance into Barnard, but to give you an insider’s word, his position really has no pull in the Barnard admissions process, especially since Barnard is pulling more and more away from the Columbia affiliation. If you choose not to believe me, then fine, but even with my father’s help I believe I truly deserved this.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I applied to Rutgers, which was due on Dec 1st, and I got accepted with a Scarlet Scholarship. I was also planning on applying to Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Wellesley, Smith, and Bryn Mawr if I were to be rejected. But thank goodness, I wasn’t and I couldn’t be happier. [/ul]

Hey, noloserhere! Do you happen to have the why Barnard essay?? I just need an inspiration because I want to write about my religion Islam.
