Barnard Applicants CO '15?

Now that RD applications for '14 are done (or should be…), I think us '15ers should get to talk :). I started looking into Barnard pretty recently and I absolutely LOVE it. However, I’m not so sure if my dad is all for it >.< “Why is Barnard a good option?” Explains 9 Ways of Knowing Curriculum, Great Advising System, CU classes and resources, etc… “That sounds good, but let’s look at Princeton and Smith (why Smith? lol) first”

By the way, I’m a pretty sciencey person but I’d like to try out some humanities too. I love doing lab research. My main goal is to become some sort of professor/researcher.

I’m thinking premed-- either biochemistry major with philosophy minor or philosophy major with a couple extra biochem classes in there somewhere (seeing as premed will fufill a lot of the biochem stuff anyway).

What about you? Tell me (us when more people come) about yourself :)

Ignore my username, I made it a while ago.

Wow this board is dead! I was going to bump, but this thread is still at the top of the list.

Hey. I live in NYC and I am absolutely in love with Barnard! They are going to have a day in March for all the Juniors and I registered the second I received that email. I would like to stay in the city simply because there is so much to do out there. People always tell me that I should go but I feel that there is no point of this being that if I do go, I will probably come back. There’s so much about this city that I have yet explored. I am not sure about what I would like to study.

Hi MVale93  when is this Barnard Juniors’ Day thing? I signed up for the mailing list yesterday…
I REALLY hope it’s not March 6th.

Is anyone here also in Columbia SHP?

HopefullyBrown–it’s on the 7th. Here’s the info:

[Barnard College Admissions](http://barnard.edu/admiss/spring_events/college_planning_day.html)

No it’s the 7th. You’re saved by a day!!!

YAY I NEED to ask my parents ASAP! Maybe we’ll see each other :)

Hey fellow '15ers! I live in CT and I’m absolutely in love with Barnard as well! The day for the juniors looks great, but I think after having been to Barnard twice in the past two weeks, making a third trip in a month would kind of be overkill.

Actually, we just got back from Barnard about 2 hours ago. It was as wonderful as ever, of course.

Where else are you guys looking?

I love Barnard so much. I feel in love with it from the very first moment. I really, really hope I get it. I think I’ll be heartbroken if not. I hope to see you all on the 7th and maybe even two septembers from now!

Hey everyone! :)

I love Barnard too–everything about it fits me perfectly, as far as I can tell. (The only problems being that my GPA is wayyy too low and it’s across the country from my home/family.)

I’m not sure what I’m going to major in yet, but hopefully I’ll be able to explore more subjects in college and find something I’m truly passionate about. I feel like my view of the world is so limited that I can’t make a decision about what I want to do for the rest of my life quite yet.

What other colleges are you guys considering?

I’m considering Cornell… especially being from NY and interested in sciences CALS could be a good fit (although I’m afraid of heights lol), UPenn (I have legacy there), Bowdoin, some others. I’m don’t know about applying for sure yet though because I haven’t visited any of them in person. Barnard is the only school I’m positive I’m applying to; I just have to decide if I like it enough for ED.

Safties probably SUNY Stony Brook and Binghamton (sorta safe?)

At first I was considering Brown (DUH username), but I decided I want a bit more of a core curriculum. I love Barnard’s by the way because it’s there, but can be catered to your interests.

Random… but it’s pronounced like barnyard but without the Y right? I’ve heard some weird things like Bernard lol. I want to make sure I have it right for when I visit.

Actually, I have heard it pronounced either with the emphasis on the first syllable or with equal emphasis on both (like “Barnyard” without the “Y”). I know my daughter (and I guess all her fellow graduates) pronounced “Barnard” with the emphasis on the first syllable and the second sounding more like “nerd” than “nard”. I do believe that is preferred.

AHH i missed the online registration for Sunday >.<. I looked at it a couple weeks ago and didn’t see that you had to register for something. I HATE my reading skills.

Hey everyone!
I as well as all of you am IN LOVE WITH BARNARD! I think it’s a perfect fit for me! & it’s really the best of both worlds (being a cozy small school but having Columbia associated with it!) I live in NYC & i do not want to be too far from home but I want to dorm so Barnard is perfect for me!
I went to a science program on Saturdays called S^3 ( S cubed lol) and it was tons of fun, very interesting, met alot of profesors (they were all down to earth& approachable!.. another awesome reason to go!) i reallyyyyyy wanto to go!

do you all want to share your stats, to see where we all stand? :D

My stats (especially scores) are pretty bad but…
SAT M730 CR680 WR670
SAT IIs Bio780 Chem760 (kind of disappointed because chem is my best subject but whatever…)
Top 2% out of 350 with most rigorous courseload possible
ECs- Science Olympiads (Sec this year Pres next)
Future Educators (Executive Board – no actual officer positions)
Spanish Club
Research during the summer-- Siemens Semifinalist
Made it to LISEF day 2  (is anyone going to NYSSEF on the 15th?)

AP’s Euro-5 (Taking Chem Physics US and Lang this year)
WHITE FEMALE JEW (yay for that temple right near Barnard that I probably won’t go to anyway XD)
ahaha that was disorganized but whatever
i have too much work due monday so i can’t go tomorrow :frowning: i’m gonna try to sit in on a class over April break.

EDIT: Btw I have SHP saturdays maybe I’ll see mdh sometime :)

wow 0.0 awesome stats rainbowrose! i think u have a nice chance of gettin in  (btw the S^3 program finished today! :frowning: … imma miss going to Barnard!.. 4 now hopefully!!)
so here i go (which is still under construction lol)

I’m a 1st generation Hispanic (1st to go to college!)
GPA: 99.49 (probably gonna land in top 1% in ranking next year)
SAt II: World History : 750 (gonna take Bio & Math2 in May)
AP: World history- 5, currently taking Eng Lang, Bio & US History
Ecs: Key CLub, American Red Cross (Treasurer), Unicef & Arista (going to run for VP!),
Church Service (& attend church classes)
Summer Activities: freshmen yr attented Science Summer Program @ Queens College, sophmore yr i did 56hrs volunteer @ a senior center , this summer i’m doing a prgram @ Brown & volunteer @ my local hospital

my stats aren’t so nice :frowning: … but being hispanic helps… right ? :/

Not too shabby mdh  I think you have a great chance too! I’m not sure what my first choice school is right now but Barnard is DEFINITELY up there. I’m fairly sure that hispanic helps A TON. Especially since your stats are way better than most (that’s an understatement…) white kids. I’m really excited to see what your SAT score is XD
Btw I did a summer@Brown thing last summer. It was a ton of fun! I don’t know if it was worth it admissions-wise or money-wise but I definitely learned a lot. I took intro to biochem which prepared me SO MUCH for my research. I came into my research project in the middle due to summer@Brown, but I ended up knowing more about my project by the end since I knew more about amino acids. I DEFINITELY recommend it if you have the means financially or can get a really good scholarship.

I have no community service though :frowning: except like 25ish hours from Future Educators which haven’t been officially signed. I’m going to try to rack up the last 75 to make 100 this summer at the hospital in the university I will be doing research at. I applied to this program that I can stay overnight with, so if I get in they let you stay Sunday night so I might just go in early Sunday morning and spend the whole day at the hospital. Don’t know if that will work out though… Ideally I’d like to take a college course too but that’s a bit much. I think I’m going to try to build up my reading list instead :)

i’m going to the So You Think You Want to be a Doctor! I totally can’t wait! i got a full schoalrship :D! (if not i dont think i would go :/)
i havnt taken the SATs yet … im really scared, i take them in june (want to be extra prepared) but i dont think ill so so well so i also want to take the ACT since its less of a skills test & more for studious students
community service is also something im working on, i want over 150 hrs& i think i have around 100 right now so hopefully i can!

rainbowrose: y dont u start doing service on weekends? (if u have time)

& another thing i love about Barnard is the way the grls are, i swear those girls are the sweetest, nicest girls! i bought a hoodie today from there (yay!) & my friends and i began to talk to the cashiers& dey were incredibly nice and one even gave us her email so she could answer our questions& help us out! i really like this because it makes me feel lik im going to have a great time if i get accepted, (one of the cashiers was a junior & she was like im scared about graduating nxt year bc im going to miss barnard!)
