Barnard Applicants CO '15?

I would definitely not stress about the interview. Just the fact that you HAD one is a positive…shows your commitment and interest. Just be sure your enthusiasm for Barnard and your “personality and interests” are clear in your application.

Aspheric - I didn’t know what to make of my interview either. We spent most of the time talking about literature. I’m a science person and this might seem problematic – but I love to read so I was fine with the discussion. The interviewer asked about what books I read during my junior year in HS, what I thought about the characters and then what I read on my own. Very little time was spent on why I was interested in Barnard, or my EC’s, even though I’ve got some substantial awards and work experience. Still, I thought it was an interesting and thoughtful interview. It felt like she was trying to understand how I think, as opposed to what I’ve done in the past. I did not have a student interviewer which may explain things.

Hi! omg I havent posted on this thread for so long lol
This summer is SUPER busy… internship, orchestra concert, SAT, etc. But I’m sure most girls here are having vacation as busy as I am.

Well I was just wondering if anyone knows whether the avg. GPA–3.84 posted on Barnard website is weighted or unweighted?

hyeonyun, I believe it’s unweighted.

@rainbowrose I’m not really looking to attend an all-girl school either. The fact that I actually fell in love with Barnard really surprised me.

Congratulations again on your test scores! That is really great! :D

@aspheric I’m sure that your interview was fine. It’s only one part of the admissions process. It’s not possible to have a completely perfect interview, and the admissions officers realize that. After both of the interviews I’ve had so far, I can see things that I messed up with, like not being as positive and (borderline annoyingly) upbeat as I usually am, or not mentioning some relatively impressive things I’ve done. The interviewer should realize that you’re bound to be nervous. No need to worry! :D

@Ranch That interview sounds really interesting. I would love to have an interview like that, instead of just “What do you plan on studying? What are your favorite activities?”

@hyeonyun I would imagine that it’s unweighted, but I would be very, very happy if it ended up being a weighted average. I doubt it would be weighted, though, for some reason.

Hi girls!!!

I’m considering applying to Barnard as well (obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t be on this thread, right :p)

I love what I’ve found so far! I wasn’t considering even glancing at an all-girl’s school, but after researching Barnard, I’ve fallen in love-the nine ways of knowing, the tight-knit social scene, the exceptional advising system, and, of course, access to NYC. Of course the Columbia affiliation doesn’t hurt. Mostly, I just love the idea of a small liberal arts experience in NYC with the big university resources that other LAC’s lack.

The only “cons” are: It’s across the country from where I live-not a huge deal, as I’m not applying anywhere in-state, but still a bit nerve racking. Also, there’s the factor of getting in…hmmm…

I want to study History and Chinese

Anyways, just wanted to add my two cents! Good luck to all!

Hello RootBeerWriter! History and Chinese sound very interesting.

Hi RootBeerWriter! Welcome to are little group thingie. ;)

I’m not planning on applying anywhere in my state (Massachusetts), either. I’m staying in the Northeast, though. I love it here.

Chinese would be so much fun to learn! I love learning languages so much. :D

Good luck to you too!

@KaiserinSisi: I’ve visited the Northeast, and I love it! I loved Boston and Massachusets, but I defiantely understand that you’re ready to get outta there, just like me with Texas. Great state…not so much after 17 years, right? Anyways, thanks for welcoming me to this board!

@aspheric: hello! thanks! I’ve always loved history, but recently I’ve become interested in Chinese. I’m not sure what prompted my interest, but once it was peaked, I’ve become hooked! :)

It’s interesting: I’ve glanced at a lot of the boards here on CC, and I must say, the Barnard board is definately the friendliest!

Ha ha, exactly. I’ve been out of my state less than ten times in my entire life. I love it, but I desperately need a change of scerery.

Are you learning Chinese already? If so, how?

It does seem really open and supportive. All of the posts here by students who are attending Barnard seem very positive.

So, for some friendly chat: What books does everyone here like? Movies and TV? Is anyone else here a huge theatre nerd?

I wouldn’t trust that average at all because how GPAs are calculated and how difficult schools are varies a TON. If there is average class rank or percentage of people in the top 10% of their classes, I think that would be a better way to go (unless your school doesn’t rank of course :P).

Hi everyone! Its been a while since ive been on this thread!
Sooo i got a 1850 on my SATs 600 (R) 650 (M) and 600 (W)… im scared to take them again because i feel like i wont do as well… I wanna take the ACT buutttt i wanna apply to the HEOP program which needs a max SAT reading score of 600… so i guess im fine?! lol such a weird requirement!! I am a NYC resident so i can apply but I was wondering if I can still apply if im doing ED?
I can not belioeve the supplement questions came out already!!! Where are they?! Ahhhh!! I am going to start on them asap! I dont wanna be freaking out w/ perfecting essays while take BC & Chem!
I am glad to see so many girls interestd in Barnard :D… it too caught me by suprirse since attending an all girl school was soo out of my list, but I really love the school and now im doing ED!

@RootBeerWriter: Yea when i was at Barnard all the girls were soo friendly! I loved it!

@KaiserinSisi: Hmmm books, I love all kinds of books, my favorites fantasy (with magical creatures!), I really do read anything! … TV i dont watch TV expect spanish soap opreas!! & when it comes to movies, I like happy kiddish movies, I dislike sad movies (i am very emotional lol) and I will never watch a scary movie (i just cant stand it i freak out!) … how about you?

Here is the supplement: http://www.barnard.edu/admiss/docs/First_Year_Supp.pdf

I don’t know much about the HEOP program. I haven’t really looked into it because I’m not a New York resident.

Your taste in books sounds just like mine. I’ve been considering trying out some Spanish soap operas to practice my Spanish. Do you have any suggestions? My favorite TV shows at the moment are Law & Order, Glee (although I’m getting annoyed my it’s lack of theatre songs lately), and DOCTOR WHO!!!, which is my newest favorite. I haven’t fallen in love with a story and all of its characters this much since Harry Potter. I’m not big on movies, personally. The main one I can think of that I love is Ordinary People. I absolutely love sad movies/shows/plays. I am really emotional too, though I love things that make me cry. I’m not a big horror fan either, though.

Hello everyone again!

@KaiserinSisi: Hmmm my favorite books and movies…I really love superhero movies. Like not even kidding, I adore Iron Man and The Dark Knight and such. My friends say I have the movie taste of a ten year old boy haha  But I also LOVE dramas-my favorites being Breakfast at Tiffany’s (pretty much anything with Audrey Hepburn-I absolutely adore her-she’s my all-time favorite role model), An Education, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Forrest Gump, Slumdog Millionaire, Gladiator, The Hurt Locker, Troy, etc. I’m also a HUGE fan of comedies: Zoolander, Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Superbad, Knocked Up, stuff like that. Stupid goofy gross-out stuff :)

TV shows? Hmm…Spongebob Squarepants. Not gonna lie. Been my favorite since I was like 7 haha. Recently I’ve gotten really into The Tudors (even though the historical inaccuracies make me cringe-but that’s the History major coming out in me). I like The Soup and the Chappelle Show (well I did, before Dave Chappelle went to Africa or whatever and the took it off the air). Anyways.

Books: Oh man. Don’t even get me started! I love books. And writing. Ahhhh. I love F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gone with the Wind, The Catcher in the Rye, Jane Austen, The Kite Runner (and A Thousand Splendid Suns), The Secret Life of Bees, Spud (it’s meant for like fifteen-year-old South African boys I think, but it’s so hysterical), and right now I’m reading Shanghai Girls, which I love so far :)

So yeah. Sorry it was so obnoxiously long!! It’s late, I’m bored, and I’ve got Barnard on the brain!

I love The Dark Knight! And Audrey Hepburn is amazing. She was great in My Fair Lady. My all-time favorite actress would have to be Angela Lansbury, though. She can do no wrong, as far as I’m concerned.

I haven’t seen the Tudors yet. Our TV doesn’t get HBO, (although, for some reason, it gets BBC America, which makes me very happy). I’ve heard quite a bit about the historical inaccuracies in The Tudors, though. Every history nerd has something historically inaccurate that they like. I remember my US history teacher loved Gone with the Wind, but would go on constant rants about how romanticized it was. My personal historically inaccuracte pleasure would be the Sissi films (if anyone’s heard of them…they’re Austrian and not very popular here in the US).

I really want to read pretty much all of the books on your list. I’ve heard so many great things about them! I’m currently working on the Hobbit and the LOTR.

@RootBeerWriter: I think everybody’s got Barnard on the brain. I’ve seen Shanghai Girls EVERYWHERE, and the plot sounds interesting. Would you say it’s worth a read for someone who has a short book attention span? Also I wanted to add that Spongebob will NEVER get old for me-- I’ve been watching it for ages!

Hmm, movies, TV, and books… I like a lot of Wes Anderson’s stuff (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic) and Pixar is absolutely fantastic. I am such a nerd for Toy Story. As for TV, Bravo has been my go-to recently. Books… off the top of my head, The Great Gatsby, Persepolis, Franny and Zooey. To be honest I hate picking favorites!

books- I LOOOOOVE John Steinbeck. But other than that, my amount of reading in high school has gone ridiculously low but I’m trying to bring it up again. I also love Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, and 1984. Also, I’m working my way through the Twilight series right now to see what all the hype is about. I’m on Eclipse and it’s not going to well
-__-

tv shows- CNN, ha. Other than that, the only shows I keep up with right now are The Office and Pretty Little Liars. I love watching Friends reruns though ^__^

movies- SO MANY. My favorite is Fight Club. I have a severe Brad Pitt obsession and I love most of his movies.

@Kaiserinsisi: I get BBC too, and I love it! I feel so sophisticated watching it compared to our local news. I actually didn’t watch The Tudors while it was on air, because I didn’t have Showtime. I watched it on Netflix-they have the first two seasons on instant play, and my friend let me borrow her copies of the last two seasons. They’re so addictive, it’s not even funny. I’ve never read any of the LOTR-I haven’t even seen the movies! (I know, I know). I’ve never seen Star Wars as well. I have seen Star Trek though, and I loved it.

@aspheric: amen to that! Spongebob forever haha. In terms of Shanghai Girls, I’d say definitely. I’ve been reading it when I’m working out on the bikes at the Y, so it keeps me interested and helps pass the time. I wouldn’t say it’s going to go on my all-time favorites list, but it’s decent, not too long, and something is always happening, so there’s never a dull moment!

@ethereality4: I love CNN too! Anderson Cooper mmm. Love of my life. I tried to read the Twilight series a while back and just couldn’t do it-maybe it’s because I’m a huge Harry Potter fan?

@aspheric I loved the Great Gatsby! That was my favorite school book in my junior year reading. :D

@ethereality Good luck with the Twilight series. I didn’t end up hating it, but I found it very boring. I don’t enjoy stories with just romance-y fluff. They bore me.

@RootBeerWriter I haven’t tried watching the news on BBC America. That’s something to try. All that I’ve watched on it so far is Doctor Who, which I love, and I tried Being Human, which I didn’t care for.

Go Harry Potter fans! :D

oh Harry Potter WAS my life for just the longest time…
And I´m rereading them now in Spanish! ´Cause I´m exchange-studenting it up in Chile at the moment. When I don´t know a word, I´m slightly embarressed to say, I can usually recall the English version…:D.

TV? Is anyone out there as obsessed with The West Wing as I am? It´s actually the BEST SHOW in the history of the universe, especially if any of you guys are into politics.

I love love Barnard. I wish they had early action, I need to calm some serious fears about not being accepted anywhere April 1st, but I really don´t wanna do the ED thing…
