Yah!! I wrote why Barnard about how I talked with a professor in the department I’m interested in, and how Barnard’s approach is unique, even among women’s colleges, and how my values allign with B’s. For my bold questions, I talked about how Roller Derby and how centering women in athletics changes the conversation, and for the woman, I wrote about Emilia Lanier, who was the first woman english poet, and is thought to be Shakespeare’s dark lady, but is completely overlooked as an artist in her own rite
your essays all sound so cool! lowkey forget what i even wrote about except the woman conversation where i talked about a woman living in one of the last matriarchal societies and what she thinks of female empowerment and improving gender equality given the difference in our cultures
I had pretty good english scores but really average math scores so I did not know what to do. But I think it’s pretty clear in my application that I am very focused on sociology and the humanities and I really wanted them to see the english score.
I submitted my sat score mostly because I got a really good score and I wanted to show that my not so great sophomore grades were actually because of poor circumstances and didn’t reflect my intelligence. But regardless I don’t think it’ll be super important
I also wrote about how I liked Barnard’s collaborative rather than competitive environment and how women at Barnard seem to be very open and accepting of others. For my bold question I wrote about how Black women through classic literature, social media, and real life events, are expected to better our Black male counterparts (even when they don’t do the same in return). Lastly for my women, I chose Addy Walker, a fictional character from my favorite book series as a kid, American Girl. i wrote about reading she was a bittersweet figure for me because she the first literary representation I ever had but she was also a slave, so I had to read about black people suffering in some way to read a book with a Black female protagonist.
I submitted my test score- not sure if it would significantly improve the application but it was on their 75th percentile so I decided to just do it. I feel like my supplements aren’t good enough, but I love my common app essay (the topic is very personal and meaningful to me and I feel like it encapsulates the person I am pretty well in 650 words) and my interview went alright. As an international student who’s lived in four countries around the world, I feel I would add to the diverse cultural perspective of the college, but I guess I can never be sure as the percentage of int students admitted is really low.
Also, I’ve tried to convince myself that its okay if it doesn’t work out for Barnard- it would be crushing, but as someone in a college post said, maybe you were meant to be somewhere else. I’ve had several interviews with other great LACs and with this mindset, I’ve been doing research on the EDII/RD schools I would be applying to and I could see myself living in some of these places for four years and love it.
Just a few days more until decisions are released! I’ve seen a lot of friends get accepted and rejected to their dream schools in the past week and that’s definitely prepared me for whatever my decision may be. Whatever the decisions are, it doesn’t define how great of a person you are. Good luck everyone!
I submitted both, but they were technically already uploaded from my RD application last year. My scores are right in the middle of Barnard’s middle 50% range, so I figured they couldn’t hurt.
I sent mine in because it wasn’t bad. My transcript is kind of complicated because I switched schools so I thought that it wouldn’t hurt. I only got to take the ACT once which kinda sucks though.
does anyone know if its a bad idea to repeat essays between barnard and columbia? for my why barnard I’m writing about a unique program that the two of them share & no other school in the US offers and idk if it’ll be risky to send in too similar of an essay for the why columbia
No I dont think so. Their admission offices are separate so I wouldnt imagine they share applications, let alone, supplements. Schools shouldn’t expect us to write like completely new essays for the same prompt imo. So you’re good.
Thank you! I almost didn’t use it because I was afraid I was talking about “black girl problems” too much in my supplements if that makes sense but it was the most heartfelt and personal so I went with it.
Hi everyone! I joined quite recently because I applied ED somewhere else but I ended up getting rejected, so I’m applying to Barnard RD bc it was my second choice. Just wanted to tell you how amazing all of your essays sound and that I can feel the support and empowerment through the screen! Good luck to you all, I hope everyone gets in because if you don’t, the school will really miss out on a great group of girls.
OOF first post here. Been stalking this thread for so long. I wrote my why barnard about the Math and French department and how amazing their study abroad program+community is.(I’m a prospective applied math major.) My bold question was why in schools the idea of math as an exact science was emphasized while they teach approximations all the time, and I connected that to fields like architecture and resources at Barnard to support my endeavors in applied math. And lastly, for woman in history/fiction, I wrote about Catherine/Katherine Parr, who was the last wife of king Henry VIII of England. She had some revolutionary views for her time period and I wanted to talk to her about dealing with a conservative patriarchal society. I connected it with my Six the musical translation project, since I’m a musical theater nerd;)
1 day left I’m so anxious…
