does anyone else have some concerns about barnard? ive heard varying things about the social life. also, it seems like a lot of girls who go to barnard are really artsy…i’m more of a science/math person who like sports and wants to join a sorority!

Idk, but I read that a quarter of Barnard students are science majors. Personally, I have a sincere passion for art history, but want to major in neuroscience and behavior so I can professionally pursue genetic research. The exposure to such a wide range of disciplines is why I love the curriculum so much.

At the open house, I thought my enthusiasm and science nerdiness was well received. :)

If you have serious doubts then ED may not have been the best idea. But I wouldn’t worry about being left out because you’re not into the arts. Every time I’ve been to Barnard the students have been incredibly kind, warm, and welcoming, regardless of whether their major is theater or physics. And it’s always good to reach outside of who you’d normally hang out with - my friend who goes there is an English major and her roommate is pre-med and they get along really well.

Plus your social life isn’t limited to Barnard - you’ve got Columbia right across the street (SEAS is full of math/science people) AND the entire city of New York is right there. I’m willing to bet that out of 8 million people there’s at least a couple thousand who share some of your interests. As for Greek life, my interviewer was in a sorority and she absolutely loved it, although she said it wasn’t the traditional Greek scene that you’d find at a state school.

:) I don’t have doubts-Barnard has been my dream school for a while. The girls I know who go there are SO NICE, which is a mjor reason I’m applying. I was choosing between Barnard ED and another pretty different school, and picked Barnard because of the general friendliness. My dad says when he walks around the Barnard/Columbia campus he’s amazed by all the smiles he sees!

@Treehugga - I can validate your fathers experience, as a proud Barnard Parent I too have experienced all the smiles on the Barnard/Columbia campuses. But it’s his fault! The next time you walk down the street (any street) smile at the person in front of you, more often than not they will smile back at you. (It’s involuntary). I too visited Barnard and Columbia when my Daughter was a prospective student, and just the thought of her possibly attending made me smile, and as I said earlier it’s no doubt when people pass someone with a grin on their face . . . . Oh, and by the way, I smiled all through Family Weekend last month, and I’m smiling now.

That was a big part of it for me too–I wanted to go to a place where people are just as happy and involved as I am. When I visited Barnard, I just knew it was the right fit.

Submitting my app tomorrow! So, so nervous/excited!!! :D

am i the only one who isn’t done with supplements…? x___________x;; AHHHHHHH! haha :). i should get done with them tonight/tomorrow… oijsdf.

i know what i’m going to write them about… it’s just really hard for me to get it out in words for some reason… and the 1000 character limit makes it soooo much harder for me :/.

did anyone else have the same problem?

The character limit on the supplements killed me too - I love Barnard so much that I needed WAY more space to gush. I’m submitting my apps either tomorrow or Saturday (I need to wait for my next paycheck so I can pay the fee) and I’m nervous, but I know that I’m as ready as I’ll ever be!

By the way, who did you ladies write about for your Woman in History/Fiction supplement? That was my favorite one to write.

@amurd927
The famous women supplement was actually the most difficult one for me to write with the exception of the ‘Why Barnard’–‘Why Barnard’ because I had a lot to say and couldnt decide with aspect of Barnard to focus on. I wrote the famous women supplement last and just picked the women who made the most sense within the context of my general application.

That being said, I think we should hold off on discussing the specifics of our supplement essays until after next Tuesday when, on November 15th, the last ED application will already be submitted. We can certainly talk about which women we discussed, what we wrote for community/ethnic and ‘Why Barnard’ after “the drop.”

Haha, I don’t mean to sound like a butt, but I’m relating this to SATs and how we’re not allowed to discuss the questions until after the test in order to preserve the integrity of our answers Its in my best interest for all of us, as the thread author.

I was thinking the same thing after I posted it, but unfortunately CC doesn’t let you edit or delete your comments after a certain time period. I’m a bit (okay, that’s an understatement) overeager!

And “Why Barnard” was a bit difficult for me too because it’s hard not to sound trite with a question that’s basically asking you to gush and there’s so much to talk about in 1000 characters. The one that gave me the most trouble of all was the community one, though - I have so many communities that I consider myself to be a part of and to narrow it down to one was pretty difficult.

@amurd927: There is a character limit?? I though you could upload a separate document that can be as long as you want…

PS: Anyone else submitting on 11/11/11? (:

Haha, I was going to, but then I realized I wanted my tracking stuff well before the deadline just to be safe.

I am, however, visiting Barnard today and making my wish ;)

PeaceLoveTheatre, I’m sure it’s fine if you do that - I stuck with the character limit because it said “limit your response to a well-developed paragraph,” but if yours is a bit longer it should be fine as long as it’s not TOO long.

And I’m submitting mine today too! I submitted my SAT scores a few weeks ago so I just have to send in the supplements and the common app. Here’s hoping it’s our lucky number!

YAYYYY! ahaha… i’ve FINALLY decided on what to write my 1 woman supplement on after changing my mind five different times… -___________-;;

SUBMITTED! Four weeks…

Today’s the day, guys–good luck everyone!

Bahh, judgement day! Good luck everyone!!! (: I hope we all get in!

One month!!! From this day forward, we have less than a month until we hear if we got into Barnard…omggg.
