Woops thos thread didnt work out at all

I was just waitlisted by Barnard. I applied to Columbia and now I can’t help but dread March 28th. I feel like if I can’t even get into Barnard, how would I have a chance at Columbia? Does anyone here know of a case where a student was rejected/waitlisted by Barnard but accepted at Columbia? Or any other information that may put me at ease for the next 5 days?

A little bit about me:

I’d like to think I’m a good student. I won’t get into my whole profile and I know GPA and ACT aren’t the only factors of an application but my GPA is a 97 unweighted and I have a 35 on my ACT (36 English, 35 Math, 35 Reading, 35 Science). I’m a member of multiple Honor Societies, received a prestigious award from my school as one of the top 10 GPAs in my class (not sure of my exact ranking, they don’t disclose), and I participate in many extra curricular activities as well as community service organizations. I took 7 AP courses and I am somewhat of an artist. I play the guitar as well. I also have stellar recommendations (and I was in a summer program at Columbia this past summer, so two recommendations are from there). That’s (academic) me in a tiny nutshell. Thanks for reading!

@collegereject428 I know at least two that were accepted at Columbia but not at Barnard. The fit is pretty different at each I think. Hang in there!

ACCEPTED
ACT 31 (E 35 R 34 M 26 S 28)
4.22 WGPA from top ranked rigorous high school
Robotics President (12) V. President (11) Drive Team Coach (10,11) - first time team qualified for Championships
Developed curriculum for local schools to use to introduce robotics in free workshops
Wrote grants and solicited corporate sponsorships for over $100,000 for school program
White
No hooks
California
high-income

Strengths - leadership skills with demonstrated success, being a girl in robotics, hardest courses taken at very challenging school, focus on community in essays
Weaknesses - NOT a test taker at all!

The process seems so unfair and arbitrary sometimes, so thankful it worked out!

@divarose Thanks! Not one to get my hopes up, especially with Ivy Leagues, but I did need to hear that. I thought I’d basically gotten my Barnard and Columbia rejections all wrapped up in one. All I can do now is wait for March 28th!!

Reflections: i’m so happy i got into barnard!! i think i’m a strong applicant overall but my ECs definitely aren’t as good as a lot of other people’s. i’m still waiting on a lot of decisions but barnard’s definitely one of my top choices!

Weaknesses: ECs
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
accepted: UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCLA, Biola University, Calvin College
waitlisted: UChicago
rejected: Columbia (ED)

Accepted!

Objective:
ACT (breakdown): 36
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Senior Year Course Load: Physics, calculus, history, English, biology

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Really strong. Started a community organization that filled a large local need, worked on a political campaign for nearly two years, extremely involved in geriatrics.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App essay was, in my [likely incredibly flawed opinion] 9/10—I was quite satisfied with and proud of it. My supplemental essays were…soooo cringey. I honestly can’t bear to thoroughly reread them because I’m that embarrassed by them.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
English professor: I’m really quite unsure, but she told me I was one of her all-time best students and she is an excellent writer.
Science teacher: I read it and it was very strong. It spoke to both my academics and more about me as a person.
Political candidate: I didn’t see the final version, but I read one draft and I think it should have been excellent.
Interview: It’s difficult for me to say. It was my first admissions interview, and I wouldn’t say that my interviewer and I absolutely hit it off, but it was certainly pretty decent.

Intended Major: Biology
State (if domestic applicant): NY
School Type: Homeschooled
Ethnicity: W
Gender: F
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Really unique educational background.

Strengths: ACT score, interesting background story, strong CA essay and recommendations
Weaknesses: Supplements. My goodness, the supplements.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, I am incredibly shocked that I was accepted, but perhaps I’m just judging my essays too harshly. The supplement about meeting a female role model was decent and very much connected to my CA essay, but my “why Barnard” essay was a bit stilted and my community involvement essay entailed a poorly made comparison. But anyway, the moral of the story is don’t re-read your essays following submission and preceding decisions. Apparently I’m not as good a judge of my writing as I thought.

@lunamoon123 wow, applications don’t get more competitive than yours. It’s people like you that prove Be the system to be so arbitrary/random. I’m sorry. But congrats on all the schools you got accepted to! You’ve got some great choices already!!!

Decision: Rejected
SAT I (breakdown): 1410 (680 CRW, 730 M, 22/24 essay)
ACT (breakdown): n/a
SAT II: 740 Math 1, 730 US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): my school doesn’t use the 4.0 system and weighs our averages automatically
Weighted GPA: 98 w

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Section leader in orchestra, jazz band, and jazz combo, NHS Leadership, Physics Club VP, and Quiz Bowl.

Job/Work Experience: n/a
Volunteer/Community service: I’ve been volunteering at a nursing home for about 7 years.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): My common app essay was about how my ancestry defines me and I would give it a 9. I thought my supplements were good, and I felt that my woman in history/literature supplement was the best one.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Did not see them, but I’m assuming they were well written considering the teachers I asked.

LOR( rating 1-10) Brief Summary: I asked my honors physics and AP Lang teachers for recommendations.
Other: n/a

Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White (European and Middle Eastern)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: I’d prefer not to say
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): n/a

Reflections: I applied to Barnard for fun and it sucks to get a rejection (it’s my first one), but it is what it is!
Strengths: Extracurricular activities, essays, supplements

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UBuffalo (accepted), Binghamton (accepted), Penn State UP (accepted), Rutgers NB (accepted), Stony Brook (accepted), UAlbany (accepted), New Paltz (accepted), Baruch College (accepted), Brooklyn College (accepted), Hunter College (accepted), Queens College (accepted), College of Staten Island (accepted), Macaulay Honors College (accepted), Northeastern (accepted), Boston University (accepted), Barnard (rejected), Columbia (waiting), Cornell (waiting), NYU (waiting), and Penn (waiting).

General Comments (if any): I never expected to get into Barnard and I thought there was a rejection was coming my way. I’m really glad I have so many spectacular schools to choose between despite this rejection.

ACCEPTED
ACT: 33 (36 English, 36 Reading, 29 Science, 29 Math, 9 Writing)
Weighted GPA: 4.52
Rank: 15th percentile
AP: APUSH (5) AP Language & Comp (5) AP Physics (3)

Extracurriculars: Band (first chair), Schuler Scholar Program, Multicultural clubs, school newspaper (editor-in-chief), NHS, Badminton
No job/work experience
Volunteer/Community service: honestly not a lot
Essays: My common app essay was about how I learned the difference between intention versus impact when I called students at my school out for wearing blackface to a football game, and I would rate it around a 9. For my supplements, my favorite was writing about how I make a difference in my community because it was the easiest for me to write.
Recommendations: I did not read my recommendations, but they were very tailored to me from my teachers and especially my counselor. I had confidence in one of my teachers to do a really great job, and without reading it I know it is a 10.

Financial Aid: yes I applied for financial aid but have not received it yet.
Intended Major: Anthropology, Spanish
State: Illinois
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Latina
Income Bracket: around $60,000
Hooks: first-generation, attended Barnard Bound program (not all students get accepted that went through this program, but it definitely helped my application)

Reflections: I visited Barnard after I decided to go ED for Brown, but I’m so glad I did because now it is my first choice, and I really love the idea of a women’s college. Visiting Barnard really made everything click for me.
Strengths: my writing, extracurriculars, attended Barnard Bound, Schuler Scholar,
Weaknesses: in my opinion my supplements were not very strong, my freshman/sophomore year transcript
Where else was I accepted/waitlisted/denied?: Brown (deferred from ED, waiting), Bard College (Accepted), Franklin & Marshall (Accepted), Washington University in St. Louis (Accepted), Pomona College (Accepted), Scripps (waitlisted), Vassar (waiting).

Volunteer/Community service: volunteered as a children’s mentor at a local church every Sunday since freshman year

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App was about how I came to the realization that bad luck was not real and that all questions do not have answers, could have been better 8/10
I wrote my why Barnard one about a quote my mom told me when I was little that I follow about being a strong woman that was akin to the Barnard environment when I went and visited 8/10
For the famous female one I wrote about a journalist who was anti-feminist and how we disagreed on the power of the female form but agreed on the ability for truth to triumph. 9/10
For the last one I wrote about how journalism has allowed me to reach my community in unique ways and how that would allow me to do the same at Barnard 7/10
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Counselor: 9/10. We aren’t close but she understands my family situation and how hard I work despite that and not a lot of kids at my school go out of state so she was happy to help me.
AP Lang teacher 9/10 we just really clicked
Spanish professor 7/10 it was really last minute but she likes me so it was probably sufficient.

General Comments (if any):
Doing this because I really would have liked to see these posts when I was applying, although DISCLAIMER— looking at these type of posts does nothing but make you anxious and we have no idea what goes on during a holistic admissions process!

thanks for the congratulations!! I’m still holding out for NYU and Columbia as I really wanna live in NY lol. I think you never really know what the admission team is looking for and whether or not they’ll accept u
