Barnard College ED Class of 2021!

I havent got mine.
This could be a really bad sign lol

@advaita try logging in from your email on a laptop. when I logged into my financial aid portal on my phone, the server was down, but when I logged in from my laptop, the server was fine. good luck to everyone! :slight_smile:

@caesia Aww! That’s so sweet. I very much hate most of College Confidential and the elitist, stressful atmosphere it breeds, but I totally agree that this thread and other Barnard-related ones (that aren’t “will I meet boys?” and only addressing the Columbia relationship, that is) are a much needed respite from the rest of this site.

@rougesneakers @caesia
I totally agree. If it makes you guys feel any better, I really do not think I have a chance of getting into Barnard ED. In total, eight students from my school applied in my grade (including me) this year and I think the 7 other applicants are much more qualifying to get admitted. Most people turn to college confidential to brag about their accomplishments, and those who are less confident are usually quiet. There is nothing wrong with being confident but sometimes we forget that there are others out there who may view that confidence as showing off. As someone who feels that my chances of getting an email which will make me happy on Tuesday is very slim (meaning – I doubt I will get accepted), I am totally stressed about this college process and am unsure how my future will turn out.

@schoolemail34 Hey, jumping in here as someone who isn’t applying to Barnard ED. Barnard is now one of my top choices, but I got rejected by my ED school on Friday and I’m now intensely looking at other options, hence me looking at this thread. Just wanted to say that I 100% feel what you’re feeling–unsure about the future and now I don’t even know what my top choice is–but I’m confident that I’ll figure it out and go somewhere amazing, and you will too no matter what happens!

@clepay
Definitely apply to Barnard if you think it’s a good fit for you. I am sure all of us will end up at colleges which we will eventually love and have an amazing four years.

Hi all!

Also a long-time lurker of this thread and 2021 ED applicant. I wanted to echo the sentiments of how nice this particular discussion is in comparison to the many that have solidified CC as a “toxic” place in my mind for years. And while I still believe that, what I do know is that this forum totally reminded me once again why Barnard has been my #1 choice for three years. You guys are welcoming, supportive, and helpful, which is everything Barnard stands for.

In the spirit of helpful, my college counselor had a scheduled call with my admissions officer on Thursday and she said the applicant pool increased by 42% this year! Which is CRAZY! Almost double!! She attributed it to the election, actually. She also said I was “reading strong” which was nice news, but I think it did prepare me for the fact that many of us may not get in this year who might have gotten in even last year. I love this school so much though that I’m still happy more people are realizing how great it is, and overall how essential women’s colleges are!

@caitmcqueen Oh my goodness, that’s not very heartening to hear. I guess it does help me levy my expectations, but I already thought that the admissions decline last year was the lowest it could go. Oh well, I hope that whatever school I end up going to it will be as engaging and special as Barnard seems to be.

Are you sure it was 42% and not 4.2%? Oh my goodness. I better kiss my Barnard dreams goodbye.

R.I.P Me if I get differed.

@Ruby99 It was definitely 42%. :slight_smile: I think other commenters earlier confirmed this by saying the admissions office has been really hectic? Also my regional admissions officer is actually the Head of Admissions too so she for sure knew what she was talking about. Don’t get down on yourself!! Just because more people are applying doesn’t mean they’re all more committed or superior. Lots of really selective colleges receive tons of applications from people who have no demonstrated interest or commitment. More applicants ≠ better applicants. When I toured Barnard I really bonded with my student-guide (okay, well in my mind I did) and I asked her about the increasingly low acceptance rate and she said that the overall student profile hasn’t really changed at all, it’s just that more and more people are discovering women’s colleges every year.

@daeneryssnow Deferral isn’t the end of the world. You can still TOTALLY get in, and you have an edge on RD applicants. I would be lying if I said I haven’t been an emotional wreck these past few days. I have essentially accepted rejection, and will just consider acceptance a really fantastic/insane Christmas surprise (not to mention what does “reading strong” even mean??). I’m trying to focus on my nice list of backup schools that I like a lot also and would be overjoyed to attend.

Does anyone happen to know how much showing interest helps an application? Thank you!

@koalakoalakoala I don’t think that’s a metric anyone can measure. All we know is that it does count for something, and interest can be shown by visiting the campus, taking a tour or attending an information session, interviewing, or attending events at Barnard (leadership conferences, open houses, the Barnard Bound program, etc.), which is more then can be said for other schools. However, if you live halfway across the country, I think they would understand your limitations and regard a friendly email with a few questions or an off-campus interview in the same way. In fact, applying ED is probably the strongest indications for demonstrated interest there is, so you’re already a few paces ahead!

Also @ everyone, while @caitmcqueen has probably freaked more than a few of us out with this new information (though we love you anyway and thank you for giving us the cold, hard truth :wink: ), if you do the math, prospects aren’t too grim. Math isn’t my strong suit, but judging by last year’s numbers, a 42% increase in applications equates to approximately a 31% ED acceptance rate–a significant drop, sure, but nowhere near the same as the RD pool. Keep low expectations (ironically, that’s the easiest way to keep spirits up in this pessimist’s opinion), but hope is not lost yet!

@rougesneakers thank you for easing my concerns and for doing the math! A 31% isn’t terrible… it’s not great, but it’s somewhat calming to know these numbers.

deferred* Just noticed auto correct changed it WOW

isn’t it possible that they’ll accept more people this year that applied ED? or is it always going to be around the same number of ED accepted students?

@caitmcqueen sorry but theres no record/proof??? I can not believe unless I see this printed in data form

@meimeilatte I guess we’ll just have to wait and see–results are coming out so soon! I imagine @caitmcqueen is just sharing what she’s heard in an effort to contribute to the group discussion.

@duffytdr Barnard has a really small campus (only three acres I believe!) and all freshmen live in a specific dorm that obviously has a limited number of rooms. I would guess Barnard doesn’t have the resources to really expand the size of their overall freshman class, esp if I’m guessing the RD pool will increase a lot too. In the past, I believe 40% of the freshman class has been filled by ED applicants. That’s a lot already. Maybe they’ll increase that? I can’t be certain at all but it does seem unlikely.

(Sorry I sound so pessimistic! Bear in mind, I’ve also been telling myself I won’t get in for three years lol just because the idea of getting in is so overwhelming. Also sorry to have shared news that possibly devastated so many of you. I just figured I would have liked to know if the roles were reversed. <3 )
