For those of you that have attended/parents of those who have attended...

How did you enjoy the Barnard College summer pre college program? My dd14 was accepted and we would love any info that you are willing to share.

Thanks!

She is signed up to do the 4 week liberal arts intensive..

Is this program that obscure that no one has really attended??

Would like to know more about it too. Had never heard of it before.

My daughter went over 2 summers and had a great time. The first summer she did 1 week and the following summer she did the 4 week program. It’s really well run - the girls get a great mix of structure and freedom, and I felt very secure that I left her in safe hands. In the four week program they get to visit various companies - and there are great outings. She developed friendships that she’ll take into adulthood. Also unlike other programs, this is actually run by Barnard - versus other schools including Columbia that host programs but don’t run them.
A word of caution - don’t believe that doing the program will help later on with admissions. It doesn’t seem to have an influence at all. My daughter did get accepted to Barnard, but most of her very accomplished friends didn’t.

I became aware of the Barnard program because the Joyce Ivy scholarship can used for it (it can’t at Columbia’s, by the way).

It’s on our list to consider for next summer.

I did it last summer and I loved it! I took nonfiction writing and contemporary art, and I did the 4 week program. I would definitely recommend the program, especially if you are considering Barnard without having experience living in a big city, specifically living in Manhattan. It was very productive for me because I discovered that even though Barnard is a beyond excellent school, it’s not for me. One of the things I want to study in college is studio art, which isn’t a big presence at Barnard, and in addition I don’t know if I would be able to handle the city for 4 years (I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life, and the lifestyle change might have been a little too striking). But I LOVED it for a month.
